Dogleg

Hometown: Detroit, MI

Out Now: Melee (Triple Crown)

For Fans Of: Audio Karate, Heart Attack Man, Title Fight

Known for their wild and fun live shows, Detroit emo heartthrobs Dogleg are quickly making a name for themselves. Dogleg — vocalist/guitarist Alex Stoitsiadis, guitarist Parker Grissom, bassist Chase Macinski, and drummer Jacob Hanlon — got together in 2015 to create music for the sole purpose of “punch-dancing out our rage.” Catchy, fun, and full of energy, Dogleg’s material hits hard and will leave you feeling the the affect way later on. For example, their debut record Melee is a modern emo masterpiece, getting an 8.6 out of 10 from Pitchfork. The band have done tours with Worst Party Ever, Glass Beach, Seaholm, Monika, and Weldam, and played festivals like Bled Fest 2018 (Foxing, Norma Jean, Remo Drive) and the Excellency Music Festival 2019 (Car Crash Rhetoric, Jetty Bones, Rarity.) Oh, and if you beat Macinski at a game of Super Smash Bros. on a Nintendo 64 emulator on their merch table, you can win a free shirt. He hasn’t lost yet, but who knows reader, maybe you will be the person to break his winning streak and get that victory shirt. Wear that shit with pride.

Innerlove.

Hometown: Long Island, NY

Out Now: Fine By Me – EP (Know Hope)

For Fans Of: All Get Out, The Hotelier, Weatherbox

When Long Island collective Table Talk ended in 2019, vocalist/guitarist Ryan O’Rourke and drummer Jon Argondizza wanted to branch into different directions musically. And thus, Innerlove. was born. Recruiting bassist Dan Sandoval and guitarist Joe Rom, the New York emo quartet began writing songs “with the intention of communicating feelings of hopefulness and self perseverance.” And in these trying times, we need songs like that. So far in their short career, they’ve done shows with Laura Stevenson, Vinnie Caruana, The Sidekicks, Worst Party Ever, and the next band on our list. Let’s move onto them now, shall we?

twentythreenineteen

Hometown: Philadelphia, PA

Out Now: XXIIIXIX (Know Hope)

For Fans Of: Death Cab For Cutie, Have Mercy, Jimmy Eat World

Philly’s twentythreenineteen are hard to describe. One second, they’re playing indie tracks, and the next, they dive into emo, pop-punk, and acoustic rock that’s borderline Dashboard Confessional. Named after a reference found in the animated classic Monsters Inc., twentythreenineteen (sometimes written out as XXIIIXIX, which is also the name of their debut album) are one of the most unique sounding bands on the list. Simply put, they’re in a completely different genre on their own, feeling like a Frankenstein’s monster created from acts like The Naked And Famous, Pentimento, and Bright Eyes. No matter what they sound like, there’s a song of theirs that I’m sure you’ll like. XXIIIXIX have done shows with Varials, Sleep In., Rich People, Nonfiction, and the previous band on this list (see above.) So if you like indie music, strange sounding bands, or Monsters Inc., then XXIIIXIX are the band for you.

Mush

Hometown: Chicago, IL and Grand Rapids, MI

Out Now: Thank You, We’re Mush (Skeletal Lightning)

For Fans Of: Dowsing, Pet Symmetry, Saves The Day

The members of pop band Mush are separated by one of the Great Lakes. Hailing from Grand Rapids and Chicago, the five-piece pop band craft some pretty fun, off-kilter jams that will make you reminisce old school Vagrant Records (think The Get Up Kids/Reggie And The Full Effect era.) It’s fun music made by fun guys for fun people. What’s else to say? They’ve performed with Good Brother, Telethon, and Giants Chair, and were at The Fest last year with Against Me!, Jawbreaker, and Less Than Jake. Check out Mush and you’ll have one hell of a fun time.

Roses & Revolutions

Hometown: Rochester, NY

Out Now: i don’t have feelings anymore – Single (Nettwerk)

For Fans Of: Bishop Briggs, K.Flay, VÉRITÉ

It’s not everyday that you can say you discovered an artist from your mom. That’s what happened to me last year when she showed me an acoustic rendition of Fall Out Boy’s “Sugar, We’re Goin Down” by Rochester indie pop natives Roses & Revolutions. Since then my eyes have been glued on the duo. As haunting as they are catchy, R&R have been one of the most underrated indie pop acts in the country. Still, that hasn’t stopped them from touring with big acts like Run River North, K.Flay, VÉRITÉ, Gin Wigmore (who’s married to Jason Aalon Butler of letlive. and FEVER 333,) and Daughtry. And their music has appeared in shows like black-ishThe Village, and Teen Mom OG.

Fake-Names

Fake Names

Hometown: Washington, D.C. and Umeå, Sweden

Out Now: Brick – Single (Epitaph)

For Fans Of: All, Dag Nasty, Naked Raygun

Fake Names is the newest supergroup on the block. Made up of members of Bad Religion, State Of Alert, Girls Against Boys, Holy Fuck (touring drummer,) and Refused, Fake Names play old school punk rock for those who wanna relive the good old days of the ’80s and early ’90s. Led by Refused frontman Dennis Lyxzén, their music sounds like Dischord Records’s entire discography. Their debut record Fake Names comes out May 8 on Epitaph Records (Early Eyes, The Lawrence Arms, Smrtdeath.)

The Abruptors

Hometown: Buffalo, NY

Out Now: Love And Other Disasters (Asian Man)

For Fans Of: Deal’s Gone Bad, Madness, The Toasters

The first time I ever saw or heard of the ska/soul/reggae/rocksteady septet The Abruptors was at an unlikely place: UBCon. No, they weren’t performing, two members were helping out a vendor sell handmade Pokéballs filled with Pokémon in tiny environments (mine had Pikachu in it.) They formed back in 2015, but their story all began years prior when half of the group left their old band The B-Side Bastards to create more traditional, rocksteady music. The Abruptors have done shows with Mustard Plug, The Aggrolites, Big D And The Kids Table, The Living End, and Mephiskapheles. They were scheduled to perform at Pouzza Fest in Montreal this May, but with COVID-19 running rampant, the festival has been postponed to next May. No word yet if they’re still playing.

NUDIE-MAG

Nudie Mag

Hometown: Pasadena, CA

Out Now: Our Milk (Triple B)

For Fans Of: Drug Church, Pity Sex, Weezer

Cali dream rockers Nudie Mag are doing things they’ve never done before. Well, one of them, technically. Twitching Tongues frontman and God’s Hate guitarist Colin Young trades in his dark, heavy sound for something more upbeat and poppy, think of a mixture of Culture Abuse and Weezer. Stereogum said that “Nudie Mag make sparkling, beyond-catchy power pop; it’s not a reach to say that the songs on [Demo 2019] would’ve fit right at home on the first Rentals album. You might be able to hear a bit of evidence of the band’s hardcore connections in their guitar tones.” Little is known about the band since their formation last year, but what we do know is that their tunes are a good time.

Charmer

Hometown: Marquette, MI

Out Now: Ivy (No Sleep)

For Fans Of: Hot Mulligan, Pictures Of Vernon, Somos

Meet “Emo’s Next Cult Act.” Michigan’s Charmer are currently riding high with their sophomore record Ivy, now out on No Sleep Records (Good Sleepy, Middle Distance, Stay Inside.) But that could’ve all changed a couple of years ago when vocalist/guitarst David Daignault thought about leaving. That’s when Modern Baseball changed his mind. “Before we signed with No Sleep I was originally ready to move on from the band and start pursuing other interests but we definitely wanted to record and release all the material we had laying around, we were really proud of the songs,” Daignault told Punk Rock Theory. “I emailed [Modern Baseball guitarist/vocalist] Jake [Ewald] on a whim because their music was a big reason I was inspired to write myself. The No Sleep thing happened and we ended up writing a completely new set of songs, drove 18 hours to Philadelphia and stayed for a week tracking it all. I learned a lot from watching Jake during that time and he helped guide us through the process making it a super relaxed recording experience.” Since then, it’s been the best decision he never made. The band have done shows with Free Throw, Kittyhawk, Hot Mulligan, Dowsing, and Pinegrove. Say hello to the new faces of emo.

Yours Truly

Hometown: Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

Out Now: Afterglow – EP (UNFD)

For Fans Of: Eat Your Heart Out, Paramore, Stand Atlantic

Yours Truly have everything they need to become Australia’s next breakthrough act. But don’t take my word for it, take The Noise‘s who claimed these Aussie pop-punkers have “the makings to be the next pop-punk breakout act similar to fellow Australians Stand Atlantic.” Just one listen to their second EP Afterglow and you’ll be hooked. Frontwoman Mikaila Delgado’s voice echoes old school Paramore. They’ve toured with Hellions, Senses Fail, The Faim, State Champs, and Tonight Alive, and attended festivals like Riot Fest 2019 (American Football, The Flaming Lips, Slayer,) Unify Gathering 2019 (Every Time I Die, Pagan, Taking Back Sunday,) and Good Things 2019 (A Day To Remember, Ice Nine Kills, Poppy.) They will be performing at Sad Summer Fest (All Time Low, Destroy Boys, Movements) and Slam Dunk (Basement, Sum 41, We Are The In Crowd) this year, well that is if Sad Summer Fest doesn’t get cancelled due to COVID-19.

Jetty Bones Signs To Rise Records

Jetty Bones Signs To Rise Records

Whoa.

Singer-songwriter Kelc Galluzzo aka Jetty Bones has signed with Rise Records (Cane Hill, Issues, Memphis May Fire.)

The Ohio based musician broke the news today saying, “Growing up in my local scene, we used to have this saying that the dream was to ‘live in Ohio, start a band, then sign to Rise Records’. Well, 12 years later, I finally get to say that those teenage dreams are a reality: Jetty Bones has officially signed to Rise Records and will be putting out a full length record next year.”

To celebrate her signing, the label released a music video for the track “the part:” which comes from her latest EP , released earlier this year on Take This To Heart Records (Future Teens, McCafferty, Sarah And The Safe Word.)

Her old label even congratulated her on Twitter. “Stoked to have @jettybonesmusic sign to @riserecords . Home of great bands like PUP, Angels and Airwaves, At The Drive In and more,” the Wilbraham, Mass., label said.

She decided to also celebrate her signing with Rise by bringing up a fun memory with Angels And Airwaves’ frontman Tom DeLonge. “Hey @tomdelonge! In 2008 we met and you signed this giant version of your head. Now, we are label mates. That is all,” Galluzzo tweeted.

Jetty Bones formed in the late 2010s, releasing so far two EPs. The act has toured with The Wonder Years, The Early November, Homesafe, Knuckle Puck, and Tiny Moving Parts. Jetty Bones have played festivals such as Sad Summer Fest 2019 in Pittsburgh and Colombus, Ohio (Just Friends, Mom Jeans., State Champs,) New Direction Fest 8 (mewithoutYou, Tigers Jaw, Youth Fountain,) Bled Fest 2018 (Foxing, Norma Jean, shortly,) and New Found Glory’s BreakFest 2019 with Mae, Hawthorne Heights, and Microwave. The band was also a part of Prenatt’s Picks 2018 alongside The Plot In You, Dead Girls Academy, and lovelytheband.

Jetty Bones is currently touring with New Found Glory. Check out the rest of the dates below.

Shortly

Hometown: Detroit, MI

Out Now: Richmond – EP (Triple Crown)

For Fans Of: Bogues, Future Teens, Small Talks

Alexandria Maniak is one hell of a singer-songwriter. The Michigan based musician has done quite a lot in such a short amount of time. She signed with Triple Crown Records (Heart Attack Man, O’Brother, Tiny Moving Parts) in 2017, shared stages with Sorority Noise, Jeff Rosenstock, and The Wonder Years, and had The Wonder Years cover her song “Finders Keepers” on a split EP. And that’s only the tip of the iceberg. Maniak is striving to make 2019 her year. Shortly will be heading out on tour with Prenatt’s Picks artist Small Talks in May and will be appearing at BLED Fest in Hartland, Mich., on May 25 with Hawthorne Heights, For The Fallen Dreams, and SeeYouSpaceCowboy.

City Morgue

Hometown: New York City, NY

Out Now: City Morgue Vol. 1: Hell Or High Water (Hikari-Ultra/Republic)

For Fans Of: 6ix9ine, Ho99o9, XXXTENTACTION

Rough, violent, and deadly are the best words to describe City Morgue, the hip-hop group hailing from the Big Apple. City Morgue is made up of Junius Rogers (ZillaKami), Vinicius Sosa (SosMula), and producer Bouabdallah Sami Nehari (Thraxx), and together, they’re here to amplify rap’s lifestyle of sex, drugs, and violence. ZillaKami, prior to City Morgue, used to ghostwrite for rapper 6ix9ine, but stopped writing for the rapper after he refused to pay back for money 6ix9ine owed him. He then met SosMula and Thraxx and the rest is history. The group released their debut record City Morgue Vol. 1: Hell Or High Water last fall on Republic Records (Florence + The Machine, Jonas Brothers, Tïesto). They’re touring with $uicideboy$ on their Grey Day Tour this summer along with Turnstile, Denzel Curry, and Pouya.

Winnetka Bowling League

Hometown: Los Angeles, CA

Out Now: Winnetka Bowling League (RCA)

For Fans Of: lovelytheband, The Mowgli’s, Night Riots

Winnetka Bowling League’s mastermind Matthew Koma is no stranger to the world of music. You’ve probably heard his talented songwriting skills on tracks like Zedd’s “Clarity”, Carly Rae Jepsen’s “This Kiss”, and Kelly Clarkson’s “Someone”. Case in point, dude knows how to write a catchy tune. Now with his group Winnetka Bowling League, he’s continuing his ability of writing damn good songs with his band. Their debut single “On The 5” took the world of college radio by storm at the end of last summer. Their catchy Cali summer vibes will keep you smiling all year long. They played their first show last year with Mother Mother and will be dropping their second EP Cloudy With A Chance Of Sun later this month via RCA Records (Brockhampton, Foo Fighters, Walk The Moon). Keep your ears locked on them.

Stand Atlantic

Hometown: Sydney, Australia

Out Now: Skinny Dipping (Hopeless)

For Fans Of: Eat Your Heart Out, ROAM, We Were Sharks

Last year, Aussie pop-punk trio Stand Atlantic started getting the attention they deserved. Now in 2019, they want you to pay attention. The group made up of Bonnie Fraser (vocals/guitar), David Potter (bass), and Jonno Panichi (drums), are kicking ass and taking names, touring across the globe with people like Neck Deep, State Champs, and ONE OK ROCK, and dropping banger after banger of songs. Their latest album Skinny Dipping, released by Hopeless Records (The Dangerous Summer, Have Mercy, Sylar), was an honorable mention for the best albums of 2018. They even appeared on compilations such as Songs That Saved My Life and Rock Sounds’s Worship And Tributes: Volume II, covering Modern Baseball and Taking Back Sunday. The Aussie trio will make an appearance at Reading And Leeds this summer with Enter Shikari, nothing, nowhere., and FIDLAR, and will play the whole Sad Summer Fest with Mayday Parade, Just Friends, and Mom Jeans..

JM Lansdowne

Hometown: Hot Springs, AR/Hattiesburg, MS

Out Now: Escapades – Single (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Sam Outlaw, Chuck Ragan, Bruce Springsteen

Sometimes reading the mailing lists you get from labels pays off. That’s how I discovered Americana artist JM Lansdowne, a Springsteen/Elvis Costello-esque signer-songwriter turning dark moments into music gold. Lansdowne first got his big break in 2014, being taken under the wing of Vinnie Fiorello from Less Than Jake and record label Paper + Plastick (Blowfuse, Devon Kay & The Solutions, Flatfoot 56). This got him on stage with groups and artists like Shiny Toy Guns, JT Woodruff of Hawthorne Heights, and even Eisley. Now by himself, the musician is trying to make his mark in the world. He’ll be touring with Orion Walsh and Justin Swafford in late April through early May.

Sanction

Hometown: Long Island, NY

Out Now: The Infringement Of God’s Plan (Pure Noise)

For Fans Of: Bent Life, Vein, Year Of The Knife

This is the heaviest shit from the 631. Long Island’s Sanction go hard and stay hard, blasting beats and beatdowns that’ll leave you bruised, that is if you’re lucky. The hardcore/metal are one of the sickest acts to come out of Long Island in years, bringing in a sense of brutality that the hardcore world needs. They’ve toured with Dying Fetus, Emmure, and Harm’s Way, and have done shows with Counterparts, Despised Icon, and Left Behind. Oh, and to show how hard they go, they sold knives with their logo on it. Yup, they’re hardcore. Eat your heart out, Code Orange. Sanction are currently on the road with fellow Pure Noise Records (Graduating Life, Masked Intruder, Rotting Out) act Knocked Loose.

THEMIXTAPE

Hometown: Buffalo, NY

Out Now: Waking Up – Single (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Chunk! No, Captain Chunk!, Hit The Lights, Sing It Loud

The late 2000s were a simple time. Obama was president, Facebook was growing popular, and Twilight was a thing. At that time, five friends from Buffalo formed a group called THEMIXTAPE, doing several local shows in the area before fading away. Fast forward to 2018, most pop-rock artists from that time in the city’s history (RIP Letterset, Crush, The Everlasting, and Rescue Dawn). Suddenly, THEMIXTAPE are back. The group did a sold out reunion show at Rec Room last year and just opened up for Aaron Carter. Stay turned for more on Buffalo’s biggest comeback kids.

Out Now: False Intentions – Single (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Glassjaw, letlive., Saosin

Ever since Cove Reber left Saosin a few years back, fans wondered what’d he do next. No one expected this. Hard rock in the vein of letlive., Refused, and Alexisonfire is what comes from Dead American. Don’t be surprised if the group start appearing on rock stations across the country. They dropped there debut EP The Shape Of Punk Is Dumb last year and just released a new song called “False Intentions” back in January. A full-length is in the band’s future sometime this year. In their short time of existence, they’ve done shows with Lower Definition, Hands Like Houses, and Saosin, and will be touring with Beartooth later this month with Of Mice & Men. Keep on trucking, Cove.

Matt Maeson

Hometown: Virginia Beach, VA

Out Now: Bank On The Funeral (Atlantic)

For Fans Of: Jeff Buckley, firekid, Andy Hull

It’s odd when your breakout single is two years old but helps you get attention now. That’s what happened to east coast singer-songwriter Matt Maeson. His song “Cringe” from his EP Who Killed Matt Maeson started gaining traction on alternative radio stations. He’s lucky he is getting this success. Years ago, Maeson did drugs, tons of them, and went to jail. Maeson’s bad experiences have helped shape the man he currently is, and all of his tales can be heard on his debut album Bank On The Funeral out now via Atlantic Records (alt-j, Death Cab For Cutie, Mason Ramsey). Maeson will be at Alternative Buffalo’s Kerfuffle this year with Walk The Moon, The Head And The Heart, and Houses.
