Kaonashi

Hometown: Philadelphia, PA

Out Now: Why Did You Do It? – EP (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: The Contortionist, Meshuggah, Stray From The Path

Formed in 2012, Kaonashi, named after the secondary antagonist from the Academy Award winning animated film Spirited Away, have been tearing up stages across the country with their unique, aggressive style called emo metalcore. The quintet have dropped three EPs, their latest being 2018’s Why Did You Do It? They’ve shared the stage with acts like The Fall Of Troy, Can’t Swim, FEVER 333, Vein, and I Set My Friends On Fire.  In 2019, they made a big move signing with Equal Vision Records (Be Well, Hopesfall, Saves The Day.) Expect new material later this year. Kaonashi are currently on the road with Downswing.

Fiore

Hometown: Seattle, WA

Out Now: Winter – Single (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Basement, Pity Sex, Tigers Jaw

Seattle is a breeding ground of great music. The city gifted us such magnificent bands like Nirvana, Tacocat, and The Head And The Heart. And now they’ve given us Fiore, a brand new emo quintet. And yes, the “- pnw” text on their social medias is not part of their name. Little is known about the group, but what we know is that they have a killer video for their song “Winter.” In an interview with New Noise Magazine, the band said, “Winter is about two close friends of Zach’s (guitarist/vocalist). The passing of one friend leaves the other to wonder ‘Where did you go and why?’ The whole song is pretty much written around those questions. We dolled up the music as a reflection of the spirit of our friend who passed and garnished it with lyrics that match the harsh reality. ‘Winter’ is about never letting go of hope. Knowing that life keeps being life even after death has played its role.” Hopefully as the year goes on we learn more about this fresh face to the Seattle music scene.

The Seafloor Cinema

Hometown: Sacramento, CA

Out Now: A Metaphor For Honesty (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: A Lot Like Birds, Covet, Tiny Moving Parts

“Sacramento was a happier place before we started bumming out everyone.” That’s what it says on the bandcamp page for Sacramento emo/math rock troupe The Seafloor Cinema. All parts music and all parts shitposting page (have you checked out their Facebook?), the recently quintet (bassist Seth Lawrenson just joined TSC in February) have the chops to blow minds while making you laugh so hard you’ll piss your pants. I mean, this is the same band that were called a bunch of “Sexy, sexy boys in their cardigans and shit” by ex-Dance Gavin Dance frontman Kurt Travis.

Cold Years

Hometown: Aberdeen, Scotland

Out Now: 62 (My Generation’s Falling Apart) – Single (Inside Job/eOne Music)

For Fans Of: Dave Hause, The Gaslight Anthem, Hot Water Music

Cold Years’s upcoming debut album Paradise has a misleading name. Their hometown of Aberdeen, Scotland, is far from one. “Our hometown is a shithole,” vocalist Ross Gordon tells Upset Magazine. “The album is called Paradise because Aberdeen is not a paradise. It’s horrible, it’s grey, and it’s cold all the time. We all live and work here, and it’s not very happy. It’s quite morbid when you stop to think about it. But at the same time, it’s home.” But it’s not just Aberdeen that’s fucked up, it’s the world itself. Politics, the economy, drugs, the shit we’re dealing with, you name it. “You work hard in school, you train for your career and you try to succeed at it, but the reality is that none of it really fucking matters. It’s a record that’s angry because, as a generation, we feel like we’ve been sold short.” Since forming in late 2014, the Scottish rock quartet have been pounding the pavement with heartfelt rock, blues, and Americana songs that would rival Bruce Springsteen. They were even featured in Kerrang! as one of their hottest bands of 2019 alongside SWMRS, Jesus Piece, and I Don’t Know How But They Found Me, who are Prenatt’s Picks veterans. Cold Years’s debut comes out May 8.

Marquee Grand

Hometown: Buffalo, NY

Out Now: Marquee Grand – EP (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Boys Like Girls, The Dangerous Summer, This Providence

While we might be living in the 2020s now, Buffalo alt-rock quartet Marquee Grand are living in the 2000s. Their retro style breathes life into the genre, showing us what alt-rock has been missing for quite some time. Sounding like a cross between Cute Is What We Aim For and Jimmy Eat World, Marquee Grand are ringing in a new era for the genre. And it seems to be working for them well, since they did sell out the Rec Room, becoming the first local band to do so. They’ve played with Dashboard Confessional, Davey Muise And The Sons Of Zero, and Welles, and soon will take the stage to open for Fernway’s EP release show at Buffalo Iron Works, as well as Alternative Buffalo’s Kerfuffle Announcement Party with New Politics and Michigander on Thursday, March 26, at Babeville. Next month they’ll head into the studio with Paul Levitt (All Time Low, Emarosa, Senses Fail) to work on new music.

stagemoms

Stage Moms

Hometown: Moundsville, WV

Out Now: Long Drives & Late Nights – EP (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Crucial Dudes, Handguns, Polar Bear Club

On last year’s Prenatt’s Picks list I talked about a duo called Hightail Home. Well, one of their members, Grayson Prince, has another band called Stage Moms. The West Virginian group, featuring vocalist Gage Vota, guitarists Prince and Drew Freeman, bassist Adham Bobes, and drummer Deion Schultz, are putting an aggressive twist to pop punk, nearly teetering on the side of hardcore. Fun and heavy, Stage Moms are a band to be on your radar, especially if you love Four Year Strong and Comeback Kid. If you’re not hooked yet, they shot a music video inside of a Taco Bell. Do what you must with that information.

telltale

Telltale

Hometown: Richmond, VA

Out Now: Breathe – Single (SharpTone)

For Fans Of: The Blackout, The Story So Far, Trash Boat

On their newest single “Breathe,” Richmond pop-punkers Telltale add a splash of post-hardcore and post-grunge to their sound, and it’s a welcoming change. But if this new single is showing us the direction they’re going, then it’s a step in the right direction. In the three years since forming, Telltale have released two killer EPs, their newest one Timeless Youth came out on SharpTone Records (Bleeding Through, Heart Of Gold, Polaris) last year. They’ve hit the road with Settle Your Scores, Forever Came Calling, Afterlife, Point North, and Broadside. Their game plan for 2020 is to release new music and tour more.

floridaman

Florida Man

Hometown: Charleston, SC

Out Now: Tropical Depression (Spartan)

For Fans Of: Hot Snakes, Queens Of The Stone Age, These Arms Are Snakes

They’re not even from Florida! Post-hardcore act Florida Man are as crazy as their name’s based on. Gritty, loud, and in your face, the South Carolina noise punk quartet are ready to attack. Made up of vocalist Jim O’Connor, guitarist Andrew Barnes, bassist CJ DeLuca, and drummer Jonathan Peace, the four friends have been active in their local scenes before combining to make Florida Man. They’ve performed with Caravela, ’68, and Cruel Hand. Look out for Florida Man, or else you might get hurt. P.S.: I’ve been dying to put these guys on this list ever since I wrapped up last year’s.

My Kid Brother

Hometown: Leesburg, VA

Out Now: Native Tongue – Single (Fearless)

For Fans Of: Cage The Elephant, Edward Sharpe And The Magnetic Zeros, The Mowgli’s

Originally known as Kid Brother, My Kid Brother have become a beloved band in their hometown of Leesburg, VA. Now signed with Fearless Records (The Almost, Kill The Lights, The Plot In You,) they’re eager to show the world what they’re made of. Focused on originality and genuine lyricism, MKB blend in the best elements of rock ‘n’ roll, folk, blues, and indie together to create something brand new. So far, they have one album under their belt: 2017’s Baltimore Street Rat. Let’s see what 2020 brings to MKB.

Queen Of Jeans

Hometown: Philadelphia, PA

Out Now: if you’re not afraid, i’m not afraid (Topshelf)

For Fans Of: Angel Olsen, Field Mouse, Ratboys

Made up of “2 gay vegans + 1 beautiful boy omnivore,” Queen Of Jeans are the face of the genre known as crockpot pop. Using retro guitars and dreamy melodies, the Philly trio will easily hypnotize you with their sound and will get you hooked in mere seconds. Billboard said about the trio, “Queen Of Jeans are the band you didn’t know you were missing, shimmying around your ears with vibrant three-part harmonies and ‘60s girl group and doo-wop hooks you don’t hear on your typical punk rock bill.” They’ve performed with The Menzingers, Circa Survive, Balance And Composure, Pianos Become The Teeth, and Citizen. QOJ will be on the road next month with Movements and Teenage Wrist.

Fernway Announce Release Show For Upcoming EP

Fernway Announce Release Show For Upcoming EP

Buffalo alt-rockers Fernway are celebrating their second EP with a release show.

The former Prenatt’s Picks band are set to release their sophomore EP Welcome To The Ground on March 20. They’ll be doing a CD release show on Friday, March 28, at Buffalo Iron Works. Ghostpool, Scathed, Canetis, and Marquee Grand will be opening the show.

Tickets are on sale now and are only $10 until the day of the show. Doors open at 6:30 pm.

Frontman RJ DeMarco said about the record, “Welcome To The Ground symbolizes the lowest point in someone’s life journey. We spend everyday trying to work on ourselves, our legacy, our purpose, and it is very easy to let negative thoughts in the can pull you down. And when all of the negative things pile ups, they send you free falling through a wave of emotions until you hit the bottom, ala Welcome To The Ground.”

Where Are They Now?: Checking Up On 25 Bands From Last Year’s Prenatt’s Picks List (2018 Edition)

Where Are They Now?: Checking Up On 25 Bands From Last Year’s Prenatt’s Picks List (2018 Edition)

Back in December, I wrote a massive article about half of the artists I covered on my first ever Prenatt’s Picks lists with The Record. I wanted to look at where some of those bands and musicians went. Some died (Lil Peep), some fell apart (Home Sweet Home), and tons were accused of sexual allegations (Pinegrove, Sorority Noise, PWR BTTM).

Now that it’s 2019, I can see what happened to those who I covered on last year’s lists. Let’s check up on them.

Settle Your Scores

2018 was a big year for the easycore group. They dropped their second album Better Luck Tomorrow on SharpTone Records (As I Lay Dying, Holding Absence, Miss May I), toured with We Were Sharks, Bilmuri, and Nominee, and…then got dropped by SharpTone. Now independent again, the group are picking up right where they left off. So far this year they’ve dropped an electric version of “My Reason To Come Back Home” called “My Reason To Come Back Home 2: Electric Boogaloo”, started recording new music, and toured with Calling All Captains, who were on this year’s Prenatt’s Picks list. And yes, they’re still shitposting. Never change, fellas.

awakeniam

Awaken I Am

No one should have gone through what Awaken I Am went through in 2018. Last May, guitarist Connor Verner-Oakley was killed in a car accident. This tragedy would help the band grow stronger, creating the EP The Beauty In Tragedy, which honored their fallen brother. They also got a new vocalist Jimmy Stevenson who replaced Adam Douglas. Since being featured, they’ve toured with SECRETS, Escape The Fate, and Slaves, dropped an EP, and just wrapped up a headlining tour in their native Australia with I The Mighty.

nothing,nowhere.

He blew up quick. The New England based emo rapper had a successful 2018 and so far a fantastic 2019. nothing, nowhere. dropped his Fueled By Ramen (A Day To Remember, The Front Bottoms, Lights) debut record Ruiner last April, dropped a collaboration with clothing label Famous Stars And Straps, toured with Fall Out Boy, Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, and is currently on the road with grandson. A collaboration EP with Blink-182’s Travis Barker called Bloodlust is coming out Friday, September 27.

7 Minute Martians

The Ohio based pop-punk group 7 Minute Martians seemed to have had a great year. I wrote, “I really hope the world pays attention to these guys, they sound amazing.” And it seemed that people were paying attention. They ended up doing shows with The Ataris, Keep Flying, and a former Prenatt’s Picks list band Mascots. Minus the departure of their drummer Nick Neumeister, it looks like 7MM are getting there.

MAKEOUT

MAKEOUT

Earlier this year, the future for MAKEOUT was blurry. Just a year prior, they appeared on the Vans Warped Tour, toured with Cute Is What We Aim For and Icon For Hire, and were riding high with the success of their album The Good Life. Then January came and their lead vocalist announced he was done with tour life and quit, leaving the rest of the group unsure of their future. That was until just last week when former American Idol contestant Kyle Dee and ex-Sleep On It bassist AJ Khan joined the group. Expect big things for MAKEOUT in 2020.

Mt. Joy

Folk group Mt. Joy enjoyed their 2018, playing various festivals along with artists like Paul McCartney, Rise Against, CHVRCHES, The Hives, and Modest Mouse, dropping their debut self-titled record, toured throughout the country and Europe, and even performed on TV twice (CBS This Morning and Jimmy Kimmel Live!). And it seems their 2020 is looking bright since they’re opening up for The Lumineers on their world tour. Not bad.

The Frights

Indie punks The Frights may have started off as a prank, but their success ain’t nothing to joke about. They dropped their third record (and first with Epitaph Records) Hypochondriac last August, appearing at Riot Fest last fall, playing Coachella in April, made a live album, and so much more. Just yesterday they announced they’ll be on the second Songs That Saved My Life compilation covering Modest Mouse’s “Tiny Cities Made Of Ashes” which comes out November 8. Later this fall the band will be opening up for The Story So Far and Matt And Kim.

Sharptooth

Last year treated Sharptooth well. With a spot on the final Vans Warped Tour as well as shows with Cane Hill, Snapcase, Knocked Loose, Propagandhi, and Senses Fail, the Baltimore based hardcore group showed they’re a force to be reckoned with. 2019 so far has been great, with the band touring with As It Is, Comeback Kid, and Obey The Brave, performing at Groezrock in Germany, and were called one of the 50 best American hardcore bands right now by Kerrang!. Later this year they’ll appear on the charity comp Songs That Saved My Life Vol. 2 covering Anti-Flag’s “Die For The Government” and will hit the road with Limbs and Wristmeetrazor.

I Don’t Know How But They Found Me

The new wave/indie pop duo iDKHOW blew the fuck up in 2018 after Fearless Records (Capstan, I Prevail, Set It Off) signed the duo and dropped their debut EP 1981 Extended Play. They opened for Deaf Havana last fall, appeared at Riot Fest, Reading And Leeds, and Slam Dunk this year, and even appeared on the cover of Alternative Press back in January. Let’s see what 2020 has planned for the duo.

We Were Sharks

The Ottawa based pop-punk group gained some attention after Victory Records (Abandoned By Bears, Broadside, Cro-Mags) released their debut full-length Lost Touch in early 2018. They got to do one day of Warped Tour, tour with Settle Your Scores and Abandoned By Bears, and by the year’s end, have Lost Touch reach over 3.1 million streams on Spotify. Fast forward to 2019 and they’re now independent again. WWS have currently toured with Summer Wars and later this year will be at The Fest in Florida and tour with Assuming We Survive and Never Loved.

The Millennium

If you weren’t aware, the Midwestern pop-rock band The Millennium called it a day back in November, lasting only four years. In that span of time, they played with 3OH!3, The Wrecks, and State Champs, did Warped Tour, and won Ernie Ball’s Warped Tour Battle Of The Bands twice.

lovelytheband

Born from the ashes of Oh Honey, alt-pop trio lovelytheband have been riding high after the success of their single “Broken” back in late 2017. The next two years would have the band drop their debut album Finding It Hard To Smile, doing shows with Walk The Moon,  Jimmy Eat World, and Vance Joy, and partook in an event run by Pepsi for the return of college football in Cleveland. Who knows what the new year has in store for the trio.

L.I.F.T

The emo rap group L.I.F.T aka Love In Future Times were having a promising 2018. That all came crashing down prior to appearing at the inaugural Sad Summer Fest with The Wonder Years and Just Friends when the group were allegedly grabbing fans inappropriately during photo ops. They’ve since went M.I.A. and maybe it’s for the best.

Fernway

The departure of a member isn’t gonna slow down the Buffalo alt-rock group. Now armed with bassist Alec Dub, the band are ready to take on 2020 with new material. They just dropped a new song called “Half-Life” back in August. Before Halloween, they’ll be playing their second annual Halloween show at Buffalo Iron Works with Ugly Sun, Post Prom, and Grace Greenan.

Dead Girls Academy

Rock outfit Dead Girls Academy have been doing well since releasing Alchemy last summer on Victory Records. Last summer they had the privilege of playing the final Vans Warped Tour and touring with Falling In Reverse. This year they’ve been constantly on the road, playing festivals like Welcome To Rockville, touring with John 5, and their first headlining tour. Later this fall DGA will tour with P.O.D. and Alien Ant Farm.

Color Killer

The youngest band ever to play Warped Tour did so much last year. Besides doing Warped Tour, they got to open up for The Mighty Mighty Bosstones during their annual Hometown Throwdown, added an additional guitarist Dylan, and dropped their debut album Generation Z independently last July. This year they released three songs, one being a cover of Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline”, played with their idols The Queers, and even have a skateboard, yes, a skateboard. Only 5 remain. Buy one.

*repeat repeat

A year ago I did photography for their show with Our Lady Peace. A year later I did the same thing at their headlining show at Buffalo Iron Works. And they remembered me. Since the last I wrote about them they dropped their sophomore album Glazed, performed at several festivals, and are currently touring with The Black Keys and Modest Mouse. It’s only up from here.

PKEW PKEW PKEW

Canadian punks PKEW PKEW PKEW were doing well in 2018, but when 2019 struck, big things happened. They dropped their second album Optimal Lifestyles on Dine Alone Records (Alexisonfire, JEFF The Brotherhood, Single Mothers), appeared on Late Night With Seth Meyers, toured with Prenatt’s Picks 2019 band Spanish Love Songs, and played festivals like Riot Fest and Riverfest Elora. Wonder what 2020 will bring to the PKEWx3 boys.

Image may contain: 2 people, people smiling, outdoor

Calpurnia

Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard’s band Calpurnia did so much since I last wrote about them. Their debut EP Scout came out last year and they dropped a new song “Cell” back in March, appeared at Riot Fest last year and Shaky Knees Music Festival this year, and appeared in a Weezer music video. Sadly they cancelled a bunch of shows this summer, including an appearance at Lollapalooza. Hope they get better.

Image may contain: 4 people, people sitting and beard

Story Untold

Canadian pop-punkers Story Untold dropped their debut album Waves on Hopeless Records (Emarosa, Neck Deep, Tiny Moving Parts) last year, which gave them several opportunities like a spot on the final Vans Warped Tour and touring with ROAM and With Confidence. This year, the band toured with Between You & Me and MAKEOUT and even got to play the Slam Dunk Festival. Expect their sophomore album sometime next year.

ASHES

Buffalo based metalcore group ASHES went through some changes this year, such as vocalist Felix Cruz III leaving. Besides playing a show earlier this year, they’ve been quite dormant. Unclean vocalist Jack Friend did launch a side project called Cold Camp last year and released their latest EP Holy Grail earlier this month. Check it out.

Varials

The Philly metalcore quintet are loving it at the moment. Just this year, they played both days of Warped Tour’s Atlantic City shows, touring with Sylar and Gideon, kicked ass at So What?! Music Festival, and just announced their new album In Darkness is coming out October 11 via Fearless Records. They’re touring with Counterparts and Stray From The Path this October through November.

Image may contain: 5 people, outdoor, nature and water

Bearings

Last time we saw Bearings the Canadian band had their guitarist Tyler Nickel leave the group prior to their tour with Less Than Jake and Four Year Strong and were making their debut album Blue In The Dark, which came out last October on Pure Noise Records (Chamber, Meg & Dia, Take Offense). Fast forward to 2019 and the group have toured with Set It Off in Europe, co-headlined a tour in Canada with Belmont, and played Groezrock in Germany. Later this year they’ll play Four Year Strong’s Christmas show with Citizen, bloom., and The Movielife. They also seem to be up to something.

Image may contain: 3 people, people standing

Hi, Mom!

The Sacramento pop-punk trio have been awfully quiet in 2019, just recently announcing a local showcase on Thursday, October 17. Earlier this year, they dropped their debut album Songs For Me. Maybe next year will bring more activity for the band.

Image may contain: 6 people, people smiling, people standing, beard and indoor

Hobo Johnson & The LoveMakers

They blew up. I could simply leave it at that but you wouldn’t be satisfied. Since writing about them, they signed with major label Reprise Records (Deftones, Family Of The Year, Green Day), dropped their second album The Fall Of Hobo Johnson, played on Late Night With Seth Meyers, appeared at Reading And Leeds, Bonnaroo, and Lollapalooza, toured the UK and Ireland with Cavetown, played NPR (finally), and will playing a North American tour with Mom Jeans.. So yeah, they’re doing well.

*repeat repeat Take Iron Works By Storm

*repeat repeat Take Iron Works By Storm

It’s been quite some time since indie duo *repeat repeat have been in the Western New York area. Last time we saw them, they were opening up for Our Lady Peace in Niagara Falls back in March of 2018. In the months since, they gained quite the following, appeared at a festival in their hometown of Nashville with Jimmy Eat World and Mt. Joy, and dropped their sophomore record Glazed in May. But the question remains: are they still as good as the last time I saw them?

And to simply put it: yeah, they are.

6tF9P5WsQGOtPfU7aPT4JA
*repeat repeat put on one hell of a show last night at Buffalo Iron Works.

*repeat repeat, consisting of the power couple guitarist/vocalist Jared Corder and keyboardist/vocalist Kristyn, rocked Buffalo Iron Works to the core. They came in town as part of their Glazed And Confused Summer Tour with Floridian indie quintet flipturn. All they wanted to do was give Buffalo the best night of the summer, and that’s exactly what they did.

daKB%yVNQgSVIyB%qNnseQ.jpg
flipturn started the night off with a groovy set, hyping the crowd up for *repeat repeat.

Both flipturn and *repeat repeat played their hearts out to the 20+ people at the venue, acting like they’re headlining Coachella. They both put on one of the most fascinating shows I’ve witnessed this summer.

nyVB5ZBCTcix8l65uLyCow
Jared Corder rocking out during his headlining set.

The Nashville duo started their 14 song set with “I Could Hear My Heart Beating”, a track from their latest album Glazed. Just from hearing this one song alone showed me that they’ve changed so much from the last time I saw them, and they’re better than ever. They continued their set playing other hits from Glazed (“Head On”, “Apocalyptic”, “TTB”) and Floral Canyon (“Girlfriend”, “Mostly”, “Plugged In”).

4um2zJ2GSnCoVkQHH7Dnbg
*repeat repeat have clearly improved since the last time I saw them at Niagara Falls last March.

However, the fun truly started when they announced they were gonna play a cover. Someone mentioned “Teenage Dirtbag” by Wheatus and another yelled out for a Pixies song. To appease all, they did a small mashup of “Teenage Dirtbag” and “Where Is My Mind?” It was the funniest thing to happen last night and you had to be there to witness the beauty and the madness of the mashup. Who knew that the lyrics for that Wheatus song worked perfectly well with the melody of the beloved Pixies hit? The cover they did play was Queens Of The Stone Age’s “No One Knows” and it was awesome. It showed the crowd that Jared can totally shred just like Josh Homme.

Overall, last night was a fun night and it’s glad to see *repeat repeat moving up in the music world. The Corders are getting the attention they truly deserve, and flipturn showed Buffalo just how great they are. I feel like it might be a year or two before flipturn officially invade everyone’s music radars.

Can’t wait to see you guys again, Kristyn and Jared.
