The Most Anticipated Albums Of 2023 (Part Three)

This is part three of four. If you haven’t read part two yet, check it out here

In 2023, we’re getting several great albums some several great bands and artists, but out of all the albums that are coming out this year, these are the ones you need to keep your eyes on. Here are the most anticipated albums of 2023, in no particular order.

Can’t Swim

Album: Thanks But No Thanks (Pure Noise)

Release Date: 3/3

New Jersey’s finest emo-pop quartet is dropping a banger in less than a month. Can’t Swim’s fourth album Thanks But No Thanks features some already killer singles like “Nowhere, Ohio,” and “me vs me vs all of y’all,” but it’ll feature their heavily emotional hit “i heard they found you face down inside your living room.” If you haven’t given this one a listen yet, please do so right now. “[It’s] about the time I received a phone call that one of my friends had committed suicide. The lyrics describe not being able to fathom living without them,” frontman Chris LoPorto said about the track. “The confusion, regret, and resentment have sat heavy in my heart for a long time but writing this song has given me some sort of solace and relief. Obviously, a very dark song but I hope it can provide some sort of comfort to others who have gone through this similar circumstance.” Check it out along with the rest of the record when it drops March 3 via Pure Noise Records (Born Without Bones, Grumpster, Real Friends.)

AJJ

Album: Disposable Everything (Hopeless)

Release Date: 5/26

AJJ being on Hopeless Records (Grabbitz, New Found Glory, With Confidence) still feels bizarre. I mean, Hopeless has diddled with folk in the past, working with Floridian act Damion Suomi And The Minor Prophets over a decade ago. That doesn’t matter right now. Arizonian folk punk icons AJJ are dropping their eighth record this May. Frontman Sean Bonnette said this album deals with a lot of things, such as late capitalism, apocalyptic themes, and the death of Sean’s mother. “A large part of this album is the terrible thing I’ve been imagining finally happened,” Bonnette mentioned in a press release. A big theme is my mom’s death, which is something I think everyone lives in terror of. But once it happens and you’re still alive, you figure out how to move on. It is, in some weird way, our happiest record.”

Meet Me @ The Altar

Album: Past // Present // Future (Fueled By Ramen)

Release Date: 3/10

Well they were only off by a year. Originally positioned to come out sometime in 2022, until it got shelved to a 2023 release date back in June, East Coast pop-punk trio Meet Me @ The Altar will finally give us their debut full-length album Past // Present // Future on March 10. After dropping four EPs, one with their first label Fueled By Ramen (Fall Out Boy, nothing, nowhere., Waterparks) in 2021, fans — including the band themselves — cannot wait for it to drop. “This album pays homage to the music we loved growing up while reflecting our modern-day lives, sounds, and experiences – we can’t wait to share Past // Present // Future with the world.” Get stoked.

Samiam

Album: Stowaway (Pure Noise)

Release Date: 3/31

Glad to have you back, guys. Berkley punk legends Samiam announced all the way back in 2019 that their ninth album was in the works. Fast forward four years later and it’s finally here. Stowaway drops March 31 on their new label Pure Noise Records. This record has been in the works for over a decade, with work taking place in various studios, including Billie Joe Armstrong’s Otis Studio.

The Gaslight Anthem

Album: TBA (TBA)

Release Date: TBA

When The Gaslight Anthem announced their reunion last March, they said that a new record would be out eventually. Frontman Brian Fallon wrote on Instagram, “We’re also beginning to write new songs for what will be our sixth LP. We’re very much looking forward to the future and seeing you all again. We want to thank you for staying with us. Stay tuned!” As of right now, that’s all the info we have to go off of. Let’s see where TGA goes with this one.

Waterparks

Album: Intellectual Property (Fueled By Ramen)

Release Date: 4/14

Well, well, well. It seems the Waterparks boys have hit the jackpot. After spending years on indie labels like Equal Vision Records (Armor For Sleep, Gideon, No Devotion) and Hopeless Records, and a brief stint with 300 Entertainment (Gunna, Megan Thee Stallion, Young Thug,) the Texan power pop trio have found a new home with major label Fueled By Ramen. They’re celebrating their success with a new record this April titled Intellectual Property. Welcome to the big leagues.

Microwave

Album: TBA (Pure Noise)

Release Date: TBA

While nothing has been confirmed yet, Atlanta rockers Microwave might be cooking something. Last year, the band dropped the grungy “Circling The Drain,” a sound Microwave haven’t tackled yet. Their most current record, 2019’s Death Is A Warm Blanket, delved into the realms of post-hardcore, taking notes from Fear Before The March Of Flames, Nirvana and Heavy Heavy Low Low. Maybe the grunge or post-hardcore stylings will continue on their next outing.

The Killers

Album: TBA (Island)

Release Date: TBA

At this point in their careers The Killers can do whatever they want to do. From the bustling sounds of alt-rock/post-punk on their debut Hot Fuss to the Bruce Springsteen-esque heartland rock stylings of Imploding The Mirage and Pressure Machine, they’ve nearly done it all. When asked by NME if a new album would drop this year, frontman Brendon Flowers said that a “full record will probably be early next year.” It’ll be produced by Shawn Everett (Broken Social Scene, Phantom Planet, Weezer) and Stuart Price (Madonna, Pet Shop Boys, Take That.)

City And Colour

Album: The Love Still Held Me Near (Dine Alone/Still)

Release Date: 3/31

The Love Still Held Me Near was born out of unimaginable loss and he subsequent journey through the grief and heartache that followed,” frontman Dallas Green said about City And Colour’s upcoming seventh record The Love Still Held Me Near. “It’s about digging deep down into yourself and attempting to unearth hope and light in the things that can comfort you through those times. For me that has always been written Gand recording music, so that’s exactly what I did.” Hope you’re ready for what is probably the most emotional City And Colour record to date.

Hot Mulligan

Album: TBA (Wax Bodega)

Release Date: TBA

The only new material we’ve received from the former Prenatt’s Picks act was Acoustic Vol. 2 and “Drink Milk And Run”. It’s also been three years since they released you’ll be fine, which I put as one of the best albums of 2020. Now in 2023, the only thing the #1 Hot New Band have announced were them opening for The Wonder Years’s The Hum Goes On Forever tour, a European/UK tour with Arm’s Length, attending Sad Summer Festival with Taking Back Sunday, PVRIS, and Motion City Soundtrack, and an appearance at When We Were Young in Las Vegas this October alongside Blink-182, The Academy Is…, and Lit. Yet there’s been no word on a new album. Maybe before Sad Summer or WWWY we’ll get some info on album #3.

Part four will come out next week!

Kaonashi

Hometown: Philadelphia, PA

Out Now: Why Did You Do It? – EP (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: The Contortionist, Meshuggah, Stray From The Path

Formed in 2012, Kaonashi, named after the secondary antagonist from the Academy Award winning animated film Spirited Away, have been tearing up stages across the country with their unique, aggressive style called emo metalcore. The quintet have dropped three EPs, their latest being 2018’s Why Did You Do It? They’ve shared the stage with acts like The Fall Of Troy, Can’t Swim, FEVER 333, Vein, and I Set My Friends On Fire.  In 2019, they made a big move signing with Equal Vision Records (Be Well, Hopesfall, Saves The Day.) Expect new material later this year. Kaonashi are currently on the road with Downswing.

Fiore

Hometown: Seattle, WA

Out Now: Winter – Single (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Basement, Pity Sex, Tigers Jaw

Seattle is a breeding ground of great music. The city gifted us such magnificent bands like Nirvana, Tacocat, and The Head And The Heart. And now they’ve given us Fiore, a brand new emo quintet. And yes, the “- pnw” text on their social medias is not part of their name. Little is known about the group, but what we know is that they have a killer video for their song “Winter.” In an interview with New Noise Magazine, the band said, “Winter is about two close friends of Zach’s (guitarist/vocalist). The passing of one friend leaves the other to wonder ‘Where did you go and why?’ The whole song is pretty much written around those questions. We dolled up the music as a reflection of the spirit of our friend who passed and garnished it with lyrics that match the harsh reality. ‘Winter’ is about never letting go of hope. Knowing that life keeps being life even after death has played its role.” Hopefully as the year goes on we learn more about this fresh face to the Seattle music scene.

The Seafloor Cinema

Hometown: Sacramento, CA

Out Now: A Metaphor For Honesty (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: A Lot Like Birds, Covet, Tiny Moving Parts

“Sacramento was a happier place before we started bumming out everyone.” That’s what it says on the bandcamp page for Sacramento emo/math rock troupe The Seafloor Cinema. All parts music and all parts shitposting page (have you checked out their Facebook?), the recently quintet (bassist Seth Lawrenson just joined TSC in February) have the chops to blow minds while making you laugh so hard you’ll piss your pants. I mean, this is the same band that were called a bunch of “Sexy, sexy boys in their cardigans and shit” by ex-Dance Gavin Dance frontman Kurt Travis.

coldyears

Cold Years

Hometown: Aberdeen, Scotland

Out Now: 62 (My Generation’s Falling Apart) – Single (Inside Job/eOne Music)

For Fans Of: Dave Hause, The Gaslight Anthem, Hot Water Music

Cold Years’s upcoming debut album Paradise has a misleading name. Their hometown of Aberdeen, Scotland, is far from one. “Our hometown is a shithole,” vocalist Ross Gordon tells Upset Magazine. “The album is called Paradise because Aberdeen is not a paradise. It’s horrible, it’s grey, and it’s cold all the time. We all live and work here, and it’s not very happy. It’s quite morbid when you stop to think about it. But at the same time, it’s home.” But it’s not just Aberdeen that’s fucked up, it’s the world itself. Politics, the economy, drugs, the shit we’re dealing with, you name it. “You work hard in school, you train for your career and you try to succeed at it, but the reality is that none of it really fucking matters. It’s a record that’s angry because, as a generation, we feel like we’ve been sold short.” Since forming in late 2014, the Scottish rock quartet have been pounding the pavement with heartfelt rock, blues, and Americana songs that would rival Bruce Springsteen. They were even featured in Kerrang! as one of their hottest bands of 2019 alongside SWMRS, Jesus Piece, and I Don’t Know How But They Found Me, who are Prenatt’s Picks veterans. Cold Years’s debut comes out May 8.

Marquee Grand

Hometown: Buffalo, NY

Out Now: Marquee Grand – EP (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Boys Like Girls, The Dangerous Summer, This Providence

While we might be living in the 2020s now, Buffalo alt-rock quartet Marquee Grand are living in the 2000s. Their retro style breathes life into the genre, showing us what alt-rock has been missing for quite some time. Sounding like a cross between Cute Is What We Aim For and Jimmy Eat World, Marquee Grand are ringing in a new era for the genre. And it seems to be working for them well, since they did sell out the Rec Room, becoming the first local band to do so. They’ve played with Dashboard Confessional, Davey Muise And The Sons Of Zero, and Welles, and soon will take the stage to open for Fernway’s EP release show at Buffalo Iron Works, as well as Alternative Buffalo’s Kerfuffle Announcement Party with New Politics and Michigander on Thursday, March 26, at Babeville. Next month they’ll head into the studio with Paul Levitt (All Time Low, Emarosa, Senses Fail) to work on new music.

stagemoms

Stage Moms

Hometown: Moundsville, WV

Out Now: Long Drives & Late Nights – EP (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Crucial Dudes, Handguns, Polar Bear Club

On last year’s Prenatt’s Picks list I talked about a duo called Hightail Home. Well, one of their members, Grayson Prince, has another band called Stage Moms. The West Virginian group, featuring vocalist Gage Vota, guitarists Prince and Drew Freeman, bassist Adham Bobes, and drummer Deion Schultz, are putting an aggressive twist to pop punk, nearly teetering on the side of hardcore. Fun and heavy, Stage Moms are a band to be on your radar, especially if you love Four Year Strong and Comeback Kid. If you’re not hooked yet, they shot a music video inside of a Taco Bell. Do what you must with that information.

telltale

Telltale

Hometown: Richmond, VA

Out Now: Breathe – Single (SharpTone)

For Fans Of: The Blackout, The Story So Far, Trash Boat

On their newest single “Breathe,” Richmond pop-punkers Telltale add a splash of post-hardcore and post-grunge to their sound, and it’s a welcoming change. But if this new single is showing us the direction they’re going, then it’s a step in the right direction. In the three years since forming, Telltale have released two killer EPs, their newest one Timeless Youth came out on SharpTone Records (Bleeding Through, Heart Of Gold, Polaris) last year. They’ve hit the road with Settle Your Scores, Forever Came Calling, Afterlife, Point North, and Broadside. Their game plan for 2020 is to release new music and tour more.

floridaman

Florida Man

Hometown: Charleston, SC

Out Now: Tropical Depression (Spartan)

For Fans Of: Hot Snakes, Queens Of The Stone Age, These Arms Are Snakes

They’re not even from Florida! Post-hardcore act Florida Man are as crazy as their name’s based on. Gritty, loud, and in your face, the South Carolina noise punk quartet are ready to attack. Made up of vocalist Jim O’Connor, guitarist Andrew Barnes, bassist CJ DeLuca, and drummer Jonathan Peace, the four friends have been active in their local scenes before combining to make Florida Man. They’ve performed with Caravela, ’68, and Cruel Hand. Look out for Florida Man, or else you might get hurt. P.S.: I’ve been dying to put these guys on this list ever since I wrapped up last year’s.

My Kid Brother

Hometown: Leesburg, VA

Out Now: Native Tongue – Single (Fearless)

For Fans Of: Cage The Elephant, Edward Sharpe And The Magnetic Zeros, The Mowgli’s

Originally known as Kid Brother, My Kid Brother have become a beloved band in their hometown of Leesburg, VA. Now signed with Fearless Records (The Almost, Kill The Lights, The Plot In You,) they’re eager to show the world what they’re made of. Focused on originality and genuine lyricism, MKB blend in the best elements of rock ‘n’ roll, folk, blues, and indie together to create something brand new. So far, they have one album under their belt: 2017’s Baltimore Street Rat. Let’s see what 2020 brings to MKB.

Queen Of Jeans

Hometown: Philadelphia, PA

Out Now: if you’re not afraid, i’m not afraid (Topshelf)

For Fans Of: Angel Olsen, Field Mouse, Ratboys

Made up of “2 gay vegans + 1 beautiful boy omnivore,” Queen Of Jeans are the face of the genre known as crockpot pop. Using retro guitars and dreamy melodies, the Philly trio will easily hypnotize you with their sound and will get you hooked in mere seconds. Billboard said about the trio, “Queen Of Jeans are the band you didn’t know you were missing, shimmying around your ears with vibrant three-part harmonies and ‘60s girl group and doo-wop hooks you don’t hear on your typical punk rock bill.” They’ve performed with The Menzingers, Circa Survive, Balance And Composure, Pianos Become The Teeth, and Citizen. QOJ will be on the road next month with Movements and Teenage Wrist.

Prenatt’s Picks: 100 Artists To Check Out In 2020 (Part 1)

Prenatt’s Picks: 100 Artists To Check Out In 2020 (Part 1)

It’s TIME!

That’s right, it’s the moment you’ve been waiting for. The main reason you guys even read my blog.

For 2020, I’m spicing things up. Instead of the usual 50, I’m doubling it. Yeah, 100 acts. Sure you might think I’m batshit insane for doubling my amount, but it’s a new year, and I wanted to see if I could even do 100 acts. And guess what, I was able to find enough.

Here at Punk Goes Prenatt, for the next 10 weeks, I’ll give you 100 artists that you need to tune your attention to throughout 2020. This list will feature numerous acts from numerous genres.

Now that we got all of that out of the way, let the madness begin!

glitterer

Glitterer

Hometown: New York, NY

Out Now: Looking Through The Shades (Anti-)

For Fans Of: Fiddlehead, Gleemer, Turnover

Glitterer was made out of boredom. No joke. Former Title Fight bassist Ned Russin created Glitterer, a shoegaze meets grunge project, to cure his boredom. With two albums under the moniker, the latest being 2019’s Looking Through The Shades, Russin is creating music the way he’s never done in the past. His music feels like a lucid dream. “I started writing songs with this little MIDI keyboard that I bought probably like four years ago now,” Russin told Discovered Magazine in an interview. While Title Fight fans might find Glitterer to be a weird departure, it will quickly grow onto you. So far he’s toured with Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, Ceremony, Angel Du$t, Stages In Faith, and Fiddlehead. If you like Title Fight, you’ll like Glitterer. He’ll be on the road later this year with Mannequin Pussy.

The Wild & Free

Hometown: St. Louis, MO

Out Now: Weight Of The World – EP (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Paramore, Tonight Alive, We Are The In Crowd

Alt-pop quartet The Wild & Free are a band that should be on your radar. These St. Louisans have the talent and skills to compete with acts like Against The Current and PVRIS. Just listen to songs like “Smoke & Mirrors” and “Paper Cut,” a track I wrote about months ago, and you’ll be hooked like I was. They went to the studio back in December with Matt Squire (3OH!3, Panic! At The Disco, Stacked Like Pancakes) and dropped “Out Of Time.” Let’s see if The Wild & Free are ready for the big leagues whenever that happens.

Mundy’s Bay

Hometown: Montréal, Québec, Canada

Out Now: Control Room (Pure Noise)

For Fans Of: The Jesus And Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Title Fight

Mundy’s Bay are no strangers to this blog. The Montréal quartet first appeared back when I announced their signing to Pure Noise Records (Can’t Swim, Microwave, The Story So Far,) as well as reviewing their EP Control Room, a modern shoegaze classic. In my review, I said, “Control Room feels like a long lost 80’s album that was finally found. The three song EP takes elements found in artists of the time like Blondie, My Bloody Valentine, and The Cure while also inspired by modern acts like The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Cigarettes After Sex, and Title Fight.” They’ve hit the road with acts like Defeater and Supercrush, and they’re currently touring with HUNNY. If you enjoyed Control Room, you’ll really like their debut record Lonesome Valley which drops March 13.

The Callous Daoboys

Hometown: Atlanta, GA

Out Now: Die On Mars (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: The Chariot, The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Number Twelve Looks Like You

Mathcore has never been this funny before. The Callous Daoboys, whose name sounds similar to the Dallas Cowboys, are a mathcore septet hailing from Atlanta and are quickly becoming a big deal in the scene. With their hilarious sense of humor and early 2000s mathcore sound that would make Botch proud, this collective are showing the world that they’re a force to be reckoned with. They’ve done shows with False Accusations, Gouge Away, The Last Ten Seconds Of Life, Michael Cera Palin, and Evergreen Terrace. Oh, and their new album Die On Mars fucking slaps. You’d be an idiot to sleep on the Daoboys.

State Police

Hometown: Connecticut

Out Now: The Whole World (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Edgard Varese, John Cage, Stockhausen

“There’s four large sources of inspiration I draw from: drugs, dreams, shoegaze, and avant-garde electroacoustic.” That’s what experimental electronic artist State Police, aka YungKnight, told me on Discord when talking about his influences. The Connecticut-based musician’s songs feel like a bizarre drug trip, and that comparison isn’t wrong. Hell, he made his EP Concepts while on DXM. “Drugs are a tool to access alternate states of consciousness, and always presents the user with a different and unique view of the world, one that is different from waking everyday consciousness,” he said. “I like for my music to capture these alternate states of mind, one that is not as stable as you’d find in sobriety. Things become more fluid, or jagged, slowed.” His sophomore album The Whole World is as mesmerizing as it is trippy, like on tracks “Space Bird (750 Hours)” and “DMT Fever Dreams.” No word yet if he’ll ever do shows.

Cleveland Avenue

Hometown: Chicago, IL

Out Now: True Love Is Not Just A Pizza Tattoo (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Four Year Strong, Knuckle Puck, ROAM

Originally a Blink-182 cover band, Chicago’s Cleveland Avenue are one of the many fresh faces to come out of the Windy City’s marvelous pop punk scene. Yeah, the same one that’s graced us with Fall Out Boy, The Academy Is…, and Knuckle Puck. They got some attention when actor Matthew Lillard listened to their song “Stu Macher Is Shaggy Rogers” after guitarist/vocalist Thomas Bulvan tweeted to the actor to check it out. And Lillard loved it. “We were in total shock!” the band told Discovered Magazine. “[Tommy’s] favorite actor is Matthew Lillard so realizing that a childhood idol was taking the time to listen to our new single was incredible.” They’ve done shows with Keep Flying and Young Culture. If you want proof that pop-punk’s not dead, check out Cleveland Avenue.

THICK

Hometown: Brooklyn, NY

Out Now: THICK – EP (Epitaph)

For Fans Of: Diet Cig, The Julie Ruin, Lemuria

Born from NYC’s DIY scene, THICK are three ladies playing punk music their way. As they say it clearly, “THICK make music with the raw defiance of punk and addictive melodies of pop, punchy and catchy and wildly tongue-in-cheek.” Their music titled “girlwave” packs quite the punch and their shows are nothing but good times. THICK signed with Epitaph Records (Converge, The Ghost Inside, Nacsar Aloe) in 2019 and dropped a three-song self-titled EP, and will be releasing their debut 5 Years Behind on March 6. The future is female, and it’s being led by THICK.

Locket

Hometown: Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Out Now: All Out (Fearless)

For Fans Of: Bearings, Head North, The Wonder Years

Remember Safe To Say? Well, they’re now called Locket. Don’t let the new name scare you off, it’s still the same STS you loved a few years back. “Two years ago, we decided to walk away from touring or playing shows altogether,” frontman Brad Garcia said in a press release. “As a band, and in my personal life, we weren’t in the healthiest of places. We put things on hold in order to figure out what it was we wanted from this band if it were to continue. Looking back to those first couple months, there was always a chance we’d just put things to bed entirely — especially if the time to ourselves didn’t give us that sense of clarity we were looking for. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case. This break gave us a chance to make adjustments to our personal lives, to rediscover our love for writing and playing together, and, most importantly, to resolidify those relationships as people rather than just bandmates.” Since reuniting, they’ve toured with The Dangerous Summer and Belmont. Back together, the alt-emo quartet are ready to pick back up right where they left off. Rise and shine, fellas.

Surfaces

Hometown: College Station, TX

Out Now: Where The Light Is (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: boy pablo, Rex Orange County, Still Woozy

While their music sounds like a tropical breeze on a sunny beach written by West Coast folks, Surfaces are from Texas. The duo made up of writer/arranger Colin Padalecki and vocalist/producer Forrest Frank are creating seductive, happy-go-lucky music that bounces around from genre to genre. Combining hip-hop, calypso, jazz, pop, and whatever they can get their hands on, Surfaces are making music that no one can touch. With the success they’ve been having, it’s shocking that a major label hasn’t picked them up yet. Last year, their “Endless Summer Tour” sold-out all of the dates. All of them. They’re quickly moving up, and you better be ready. Their third album Horizons drops February 28.

Bayside Announce 20th Anniversary Tour

Queens punk rockers Bayside are turning 20 this year, and they’re celebrating in a massive way that only they can do.

A Bayside museum will also be a part of the tour, featuring “collections of photos and artwork spanning through their career,” as told by Alternative PressCheck out the tour dates below.

No photo description available.

“When we started this band, we never even considered that one day we would be planning our first tour, let alone a 20th anniversary tour one day,” Bayside wrote on social media. “It’s been a long road and we’re so excited to celebrate this amazing milestone with all of the fans that have allowed us to exist this long.”

General admission tickets go on sale Thursday, January 30, 12 p.m. local time, but pre-orders and fan bundles can be purchased now on Sound Rink.

Bayside’s latest album Interrobang came out in October on Hopeless Records (The Dangerous Summer, Lil Xtra, Vaines.) Senses Fail re-released their debut EP From The Depths Of Dreams back in September on Pure Noise Records (Just Friends, Microwave, The Story So Far.) Hawthorne Heights dropped a B-sides and rarities record called Lost Frequencies in November, also on Pure Noise. Can’t Swim’s newest EP Foreign Language came out in October on Pure Noise.
