The Most Anticipated Albums Of 2022 (Part One)

The Most Anticipated Albums Of 2022 (Part One)

New year, new music.

2021 was the year many musicians showed us the works they created during the 2020 pandemic. And since the pandemic is still (somewhat) raging around the world, it’s giving musicians even more time to perfect their craft.

In 2022, we’re getting several great albums some several great bands and artists, but out of all the albums that are coming out this year, these are the ones you need to keep your eyes on. Here are the most anticipated albums of 2022, in no particular order.

Tears For Fears

Album: The Tipping Point (Concord)

Release Date: 2/25

Could it be? Is this actually happening? Are we finally getting brand spanking new music from Tears For Fears? Yes. Sound the alarm. The last time these British legends dropped an album of new original material was 2004’s Everybody Loves A Happy Ending. 18 years later, we’ve been gifted The Tipping Point, ten songs fueled by sadness and pain which nearly pushed Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith to their tipping points (no pun intended). Let’s see if the nearly two decade long wait was worth it when it drops this Friday.

D.R.U.G.S.

Album: TBA (Velocity)

Release Date: TBA

Don’t call it a comeback. Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows aka D.R.U.G.S. have been really busy creating their second album, their first since 2011’s self-titled debut. Back in December, frontman Craig Owens announced that the vocals were all recorded. “Can’t begin to tell you how much this new D.R.U.G.S. album means” he wrote on Twitter earlier this month. “Those who’ve heard it say it’s my best work yet. We are at the beginning of a new era, and I can’t wait to share this experience with all of you. Get ready! It’s coming soon…” Earlier this month, the band dropped a new track called “DESTINY”. No release date has been posted, but it will come out this year on Velocity Records (Eve 6, If I Die First, Thursday).

†††

Album: TBA (Warner)

Release Date: Spring

It’s the return of Crosses (spelled †††)! The experimental superduo consisting of Deftones’s frontman Chino Moreno and Far’s Shaun Lopez dropped two covers over the last two years, but now they are confirming new music is on the way. “Very happy to announce that @crossesmusic recently signed a worldwide deal with @warnerrecords. Looking forward to working with such an amazing crew,” Lopez posted in a statement on Instagram. The record should come out this spring on Warner Records (Avenged Sevenfold, The Head And The Heart, Saweetie).

weezer release dates szns four albums spring summer fall winter seasons

Weezer

Album: The SZNS Saga (Atlantic/Crush)

Release Dates: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter

Last year, Weezer dropped two albums. Now, they’re upping the ante by releasing four albums in 2022. Dubbed the “SZNS” saga, each record is supposed to have a sound relating to its coordinated season. As NME put it, “Each of the project’s albums is due to be released on the first day of every season next year, and will feature its own unique style. For example, one of the four records will be inspired by Elliot Smith. Another will be inspired by Weezer themselves.” So if this is happening, the first album should come out March 20.

Avril Lavigne performs on the Tonight show in 2002

Avril Lavigne

Album: Love Sux (DTA)

Release Date: 2/25

If you told me a decade ago that Avril Lavigne would be making a comeback in the pop-punk world, I would’ve laughed. But alas I’m the fool. Coming this Friday is the Canadian pop-punk superstar’s comeback record Love Sux, dropping on Travis Barker’s label DTA. Her seventh album has her collaborating with stars like Machine Gun Kelly, blackbear, and Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus, and was produced by her boyfriend Derek Smith aka Mod Sun and scene producer John Feldmann (311, Escape The Fate, The Used).

Streetlight Manifesto

Album: TBA (Pentimento)

Release Date: TBA

Just to let you know how long it’s been since Jersey ska legends Streetlight Manifesto dropped a record, Victory Records was still around, Obama was president, and I was still in high school. And it seemed that we would never get that long-awaited sixth album. That all changed when the band posted last July that a new album was underway. “So you’ve been asking about it and we’ve been coy about it. And there’s a reason we’ve been keeping things on the down low, and that’s simply because we don’t want to talk about something until it’s well under way and inevitable. That changes today because, well, it is now WELL under way and inevitable,” the band posted on Facebook. “Along with everyone else on the planet, our plans for 2020 and 2021 were a bit… steamrolled. We are now back on track and for the last few months have resumed working in the studio after a year apart from one another, both remotely and in person, on what will be our next album. This is simply a proof of life post, with some photos to prove that all of the SM gentlemen are alive and being kept busy in the studio. Hydration and food rations are being provided when absolutely necessary. We won’t have anything to share with your earballs for a bit, but we’re on course to release this behemoth of a record sometime in 2022. We will sporadically provide updates now and then, but we want all of you faithful and kind (and PATIENT) Streetlight fans to know we are hard at work and hope to exceed your expectations with a new batch of jams soon.” Now all we can do is be patient. But hey, at least we know it’s coming!

Dashboard Confessional

Album: All The Truth That I Can Tell (AWAL)

Release Date: 2/25

After a four year gap and an almost deadly motorcycle crash in 2020, Chris Carrabba’s beloved acoustic emo/rock band Dashboard Confessional has returned with new music on a new label. Dropping this Friday is the eighth album All The Truth That I Can Tell, releasing under the AWAL banner (Aly & AJ, Everything Everything, Lauv). Carrabba opened up about the album to Kerrang!, saying, “Honesty was at the heart of the writing process, at the heart of the recording process, and at the heart of this collection of songs. I had the rare opportunity to be unflinchingly honest. But I think I would have thought in the early days that that would be commonplace. Now, I realize it’s some kind of cycle within your life and there’s great personal reward in accepting that.”

Belmont

Album: Aftermath (Pure Noise)

Release Date: 3/4

After dropping two EPs with Pure Noise Records (Devon Kay & The Solutions, Grumpster, Moon Tooth), Chicago easycore trio Belmont will be finally dropping their first full-length with the label, Aftermath, next Friday. The album is the band’s second overall. Vocalist Taz Johnson talked about Aftermath in a press release, stating, “There’s a lot of serious stuff on this album. It’s personal and vulnerable and hopefully people can relate to it. But at the same time, the process of making it taught us to remember to have fun.” Drummer Brian Lada adds, “All our influences are here, and we put them into one big melting pot. More than anything, I just hope this album inspires people to give less of a fuck and instead do whatever they want.”

100 gecs

Album: 10000 gecs (Atlantic/Big Beat/Dog Show)

Release Date: TBA

100 gecs were one of the many bands I have let slip through my fingers on my Prenatt’s Picks a few years ago. Still won’t get over that, especially with how popular the experimental hyperpop duo of Laura Les and Dylan Brady have gotten. Their groundbreaking debut record 1000 gecs changed the game of pop music for the greater good (or not, your opinion). And now, with 10000 gecs, they’ll up the ante somehow. So far, we’ve heard some tracks off of 10000 gecs on their 10000 gecs tour last fall like “Hey Big Man”, “Fallen For You”, “One Million Dollars”, “Hollywood Baby”, and the only commercially released song “mememe” (with the Toronto date being cancelled and being moved to Buffalo, which I got to see with the creator of the Punk Goes Prenatt logo and icon. And someone recorded the show on their Nintendo 3DS.) With what has been performed and released, 10000 gecs will blow their debut out of the water.

Nekrogoblikon

Album: The Fundamental Slimes And Humours (Mystery Box)

Release Date: 4/1

The greatest goblin-inspired melodic death metal band has returned. Santa Barbara’s Nekrogoblikon are set to unleash their heaviest goblin-est record to date, The Fundamental Slimes And Humours, hitting stores and steaming services on April Fools’ Day. If you wanna hear a sneak peek at the record, check out “This Is It”, a heavy banger that has the band sounding as tight as ever. “This was the first song that got completed during the writing/demoing process, meaning it’s also the one we’ve been waiting the longest for you all to hear,” the band wrote in a press release. 2022 is no longe the year of the tiger, now it is the year of the goblin.

Part two will come out next week!

The Most Anticipated Albums Of 2021 (Part Three)

The Most Anticipated Albums Of 2021 (Part Three)

This is part three of four. If you haven’t read part two yet, check it out here.

While 2020 was shit, the albums we got that year were pretty tight. But some records were delayed for the sole purpose of releasing them when touring was given the “OK” to. As of now, touring is still off limits, but that won’t stop some bands from dropping new music this year.

In 2021, we’re getting several great albums some several great bands and artists, but out of all the albums that are coming out this year, these are the ones you need to keep your eyes on. Here are the most anticipated albums of 2021, in no particular order.

Weezer – 'Van Weezer' review: pop-rockers throw up the the Devil horns

Weezer

Album: Van Weezer (Atlantic/Crush)

Release Date: 5/7

Tomorrow’s the big day! After the surprise release of their baroque-pop influenced album OK Human back in January, Weezer are following that record up with Van Weezer, an album packed with elements of stadium rock and power pop. If you’ve longed to hear Weezer playing songs with an extra emphasis to rock, you won’t be disappointed with this beauty comes out at midnight.

Rise Against Striking A Chord | Ernie Ball

Rise Against

Album: Nowhere Generation (Loma Vista)

Release Date: 6/4

Announced back in March, Chicago punk rockers Rise Against unveiled their ninth album Nowhere Generation. It will be their first album released via Loma Vista Recordings (Ghost, Manchester Orchestra, Show Me The Body). “I’ve come to realize that people want honesty and that music can be a catalyst for change,” frontman Tim McIlrath told 98KUPD on the record. “I think in many ways, we’ve been on a mission to rile people up, and I feel very lucky to be able to do that. Our hope on this record is to jostle people awake, even it if makes you uncomfortable.” And knowing Rise Against, they surely won’t disappoint.

Billie Eilish Announces New Album Happier Than Ever | Pitchfork

Billie Eilish

Album: Happier Than Ever (Darkroom/Interscope)

Release Date: 7/30

After making waves with her Grammy Award winning debut When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, Billie Eilish has returned. She spent her time during the pandemic crafting tracks with her brother Finneas. So far, she’s dropped three tracks off of Happier Than Ever. Who knows if she can top the massive success her debut gave her when the album drops in late July.

Hear Oceans Ate Alaska's first new song in three years “Metamorph”

Oceans Ate Alaska

Album: TBA (Fearless)

Release Date: TBA

It’s been four years since the world got a new album from British prog-metalcore act Oceans Ate Alaska. But all of that changed when we finally got a new song from them back in November, “Metamorph”. The track marks the return of original vocalist James Harrison who left OAA in late 2016. While no word of a follow up to 2017’s Hikaru has been made, one has to hope that a new OAA record will drop sometime this year on Fearless Records (The Almost, NOT A TOY, Varials).

Drug Church - Pure Noise Records

Drug Church

Album: TBA (Pure Noise)

Release Date: TBA

I absolutely loved Drug Church’s last record Cheer. I put it as my favorite album of 2018. Three years have passed and no word of an album as announced (except the killer song “Bliss Out” dropping during the pandemic), until they told BrooklynVegan that LP4 was on the way. While announcing their upcoming EP Tawny, coming out May 28 on Pure Noise Records (Action/Adventure, Four Year Strong, Meg & Dia), the Albany post-grunge act said that a fourth album would be coming out in 2021. When? Who knows. Let’s see if it’ll be #1 on my list yet again.

Twenty One Pilots reveal details of next album: "There's definitely an end-game"

twenty one pilots

Album: Scaled And Icy (Fueled By Ramen)

Release Date: 5/21

Scaled And Icy, the new album by alt-hip-hop duo twenty one pilots, seems to be picking up right after the end of their last record Trench. The title is an anagram for “Clancy Is Dead”, the main protagonist from Trench. While working on Scaled And Icy, Rolling Stone wrote, “Scaled and Icy was created largely while the two band members Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun were in Covid-19 lockdown in their respective homes. The two collaborated on the album virtually, with Joseph writing and producing in his home and Dun recording and engineering his drum takes from across the country.” So far, fans are loving the new songs that are dropping.

Senses Fail

Album: What The Thunder Said, Hell Is In Your Head and TBA (Pure Noise)

Release Date: TBA

Yes that’s right. We’re getting TWO Senses Fail albums coming this year on Pure Noise. The news about the two records came out back in September, along with announcements for vocalist Buddy Neilson’s other projects Speak The Truth…Even If Your Voice Shakes, Bayonet, Sweater Weather, remixes, and full acoustic renditions of Let It Enfold You and Still Searching. Are we strong enough to handle all of this post-hardcore awesomeness?

The Maine: Dissecting a Decade With the Band Before the Release of New Album 'Lovely Little Lonely' | Billboard | Billboard

The Maine

Album: XOXO: From Love And Anxiety In Real Time (8123/Photo Finish)

Release Date: 7/9

The Maine were busy in 2020. As Alternative Press put it, “[they] have been working every possible second of 2020 to bring us a new record in 2021, which is crazy considering frontman John O’Callaghan got married and drummer Pat Kirch became a husband and father this year. While in quarantine, the band performed livestreams to say goodbye to their 2019 record, You Are OK, play through Forever Halloween for the first time ever and record a cover and music video for Harry Styles’ “Watermelon Sugar.” To keep that busy streak going, they worked on their eighth studio album XOXO: From Love And Anxiety In Real Time and are partnering up with Photo Finish Records (3OH!3, Handsome Ghost, SHAED) to help distribute it. O’Callaghan told AP, “It’ll be a concise record in that it’s exactly what we wanted people to hear. And I’m just really excited to finish the damn thing.”

Lorde

Lorde

Album: TBA (Lava/Republic/Universal)

Release Date: TBA

Fans of Lorde have been dying for a new record from the New Zealand alt-pop artist for years. Ever since Melodrama came out in 2017, we’ve been craving anything from Lorde. But the pandemic, as well as her Antarctic expedition in 2019 and the passing of her dog Pearl that same year, caused the making of her third album to be continuously delayed. She’s working on the album with longtime producer Jack Antonoff (fun., Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift).

AFI share taste of forthcoming 11th album with two new singles

AFI

Album: Bodies (Rise)

Release Date: 6/11

Goth-punks AFI have returned and are releasing their 11th album Bodies next month on their new label Rise Records (Chapel, Flogging Molly, Make Them Suffer). From what we’ve heard so far from the album, it sounds like nothing the band has done before, and it’s a beautiful breath of fresh air from a band that’s been trucking along for the past 30 years. “Anyone who knows our catalog knows that no two records really sit together,” guitarist Jade Puget told Louder about Bodies. “Some sit a little closer, maybe. We do certain things, just by virtue of who we are, that are consistent, but those things come about organically. Every time we do something, I have to judge it on its own merits. Some fans are going to judge a new album, or a new song, based on what’s come before. But as artists, we can’t do that, because it would only hinder our creativity.”

Look out for part four which will come out soon!

A Day To Remember

Album: You’re Welcome (Fueled By Ramen)

Release Date: Early 2020

Originally scheduled for a November release, pop-punk/metalcore outfit A Day To Remember had to push the release date for their long-awaited seventh studio album You’re Welcome due to mixing and artwork not being ready. So far, they’ve given us two new songs (three excluding the track they did with Marshmello) to keep us happy. Hopefully it comes out soon.

Every Time I Die

Album: TBA

Release Date: TBA (Epitaph Records)

Four years. That’s how long it’s been since Every Time I Die have dropped a new album. Low Teens brought in a whole new audience for ETID, and a new album would help their fanbase (what up, ETIDiots?) greatly. We did hear some new tracks during their ‘Tid The Season shows back in December, and they were sick as fuck. The band will be in the studio with Low Teens producer Will Putney (The Acacia Strain, Fit For An Autopsy, Knocked Loose) later this month after they wrap up a short tour in Europe.

Kesha

Album: High Road (RCA Records/Kemosabe)

Release Date: 1/31

Poppy Kesha is back and stronger than ever. Fueled by the success of her inspiring past record Rainbow, the singer is ready to give us one hell of a good time. She told Rolling Stone that High Road is nothing but “pure and utter debaucherous joy.” Bouncing around genres like country (“Resentment”) and pure pop (“Raising Hell”,) High Road might be the best pop record of 2020. The end of the month seems so far away now.

New Found Glory

Album: TBA (Hopeless Records)

Release Date: TBA

Pop-punk legends New Found Glory haven’t released an album filled with original music since 2017, but they did tide us over last year with the covers EP From The Screen To Your Stereo 3, plus a demo for their new song “Puzzles.” While no news has come out yet on the band being in the studio, they did say that a new record will be out sometime this year.

Weezer

Album: Van Weezer (Atlantic Records/Crush Music)

Release Date: 5/15

Will this be the album that will make Weezer great again? Maybe. After dropping their riffy hard rock track “The End Of The Game” late last year, Weezer revealed their new album Van Weezer, which drops 14 months after their last record. Vocalist Rivers Cuomo told Entertainment Weekly, “What I’ve been working on the last two weeks is back to big guitars. Blue Album-ish, but a little more riffy. The working title is Van Weezer. The inspiration came from our live shows, where, in the middle of ‘Beverly Hills,’ unlike on the album, everything stops and I just break out with this crazy guitar solo. We noticed that, recently, the crowd just goes crazy when I do that. So it feels like maybe the audience is ready for some shredding again.” Please don’t be a disappointment like your previous records (Love you, Hurley.)

The Aquabats!

Album: TBA (Gloopy Records)

Release Date: TBA

With the success of their Kickstarter campaign, superhero band The Aquabats! were able to fund 12 new mini-episodes and two new albums. Backers got downloads for The Aquabats! Super Show! Television Soundtrack: Volume One and The Fury of The Aquabats! Live at The Fonda!. But those weren’t the albums. After dropping a new song called “Skeleton Inside!” in October, the group announced that a new album was coming out “later this year,” but that didn’t happen. Expect it to come out before summer.

The 1975

Album: Notes On A Conditional Form (Dirty Hit/Polydor Records)

Release Date: 2/21

No way was this album coming out in 2019. I originally had this record on last year’s list, but it never saw a spring or summer release. Turns out it wasn’t done yet. Currently we have three tracks off of Notes On A Conditional Form and they’re all killer. The album will contain 22 songs, their biggest album to date. Who’s ready for February?

Four Year Strong

Album: TBA (Pure Noise Records)

Release Date: Late Winter

Their self-titled record came out in 2015, five years ago. Then they released a rarities album called Some Of You Will Like This, Some Of You Won’t in 2017 that confused fans. But finally new music will be out way later this year. Working with producer Will Putney (look at ETID’s entry above,) the Worcester, Mass., group are aiming to kick ass once again. And from what we heard at their Christmas show last month, it’s gonna be beyond good.

’68

Album: Give One, Take One (Cooking Vinyl)

Release Date: Spring

So much happened after noise rock duo ’68 dropped Two Parts Viper two years ago. Drummer Michael McClellan quit and was replaced with Nikko Yamada, toured with Avatar, The Devil Wears Prada, and Stone Sour, and caught the attention of producer Nick Raskulinecz (Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters, Rush.) Vocalist Josh Scogin told Alternative Press about working with Raskulinecz, saying he “will have a wonderful outside opinion on our songs. Sometimes it is easy to get a little narrow-minded on where a song can go or what a song can do, since you have had such a singular vision of a particular song from its very conception. Having a third party such as Nick can really help shed new light.” Can’t wait for this album to come out.

Broadside

Album: TBA (Victory Records)

Release Date: TBA

Pop-punkers Broadside ended their Paradise era late last year and dropped two new songs to tide us over until we hear anything about their third studio album. Vocalist Ollie Baxxter said in a press release back in August, “We are at the halfway mark on completing our third record. We decided to dial in all of our interests on this album. Personally, I’m excited to pull a lot of my influences from some of my favorite bands in a way I couldn’t imagine doing previously. Before we were afraid to experiment because we were afraid of losing our ‘pop-punk’ audience, but as we’ve gotten older we realize it’s important to be true to yourself as musicians and artists.” Just don’t be surprised if it doesn’t sound like Old Bones.

Part two will come out later today.
