Kaonashi

Out Now: Why Did You Do It? – EP (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: The Contortionist, Meshuggah, Stray From The Path

Formed in 2012, Kaonashi, named after the secondary antagonist from the Academy Award winning animated film Spirited Away, have been tearing up stages across the country with their unique, aggressive style called emo metalcore. The quintet have dropped three EPs, their latest being 2018’s Why Did You Do It? They’ve shared the stage with acts like The Fall Of Troy, Can’t Swim, FEVER 333, Vein, and I Set My Friends On Fire.  In 2019, they made a big move signing with Equal Vision Records (Be Well, Hopesfall, Saves The Day.) Expect new material later this year. Kaonashi are currently on the road with Downswing.

Fiore

Hometown: Seattle, WA

Out Now: Winter – Single (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Basement, Pity Sex, Tigers Jaw

Seattle is a breeding ground of great music. The city gifted us such magnificent bands like Nirvana, Tacocat, and The Head And The Heart. And now they’ve given us Fiore, a brand new emo quintet. And yes, the “- pnw” text on their social medias is not part of their name. Little is known about the group, but what we know is that they have a killer video for their song “Winter.” In an interview with New Noise Magazine, the band said, “Winter is about two close friends of Zach’s (guitarist/vocalist). The passing of one friend leaves the other to wonder ‘Where did you go and why?’ The whole song is pretty much written around those questions. We dolled up the music as a reflection of the spirit of our friend who passed and garnished it with lyrics that match the harsh reality. ‘Winter’ is about never letting go of hope. Knowing that life keeps being life even after death has played its role.” Hopefully as the year goes on we learn more about this fresh face to the Seattle music scene.

The Seafloor Cinema

Hometown: Sacramento, CA

Out Now: A Metaphor For Honesty (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: A Lot Like Birds, Covet, Tiny Moving Parts

“Sacramento was a happier place before we started bumming out everyone.” That’s what it says on the bandcamp page for Sacramento emo/math rock troupe The Seafloor Cinema. All parts music and all parts shitposting page (have you checked out their Facebook?), the recently quintet (bassist Seth Lawrenson just joined TSC in February) have the chops to blow minds while making you laugh so hard you’ll piss your pants. I mean, this is the same band that were called a bunch of “Sexy, sexy boys in their cardigans and shit” by ex-Dance Gavin Dance frontman Kurt Travis.

Cold Years

Hometown: Aberdeen, Scotland

Out Now: 62 (My Generation’s Falling Apart) – Single (Inside Job/eOne Music)

For Fans Of: Dave Hause, The Gaslight Anthem, Hot Water Music

Cold Years’s upcoming debut album Paradise has a misleading name. Their hometown of Aberdeen, Scotland, is far from one. “Our hometown is a shithole,” vocalist Ross Gordon tells Upset Magazine. “The album is called Paradise because Aberdeen is not a paradise. It’s horrible, it’s grey, and it’s cold all the time. We all live and work here, and it’s not very happy. It’s quite morbid when you stop to think about it. But at the same time, it’s home.” But it’s not just Aberdeen that’s fucked up, it’s the world itself. Politics, the economy, drugs, the shit we’re dealing with, you name it. “You work hard in school, you train for your career and you try to succeed at it, but the reality is that none of it really fucking matters. It’s a record that’s angry because, as a generation, we feel like we’ve been sold short.” Since forming in late 2014, the Scottish rock quartet have been pounding the pavement with heartfelt rock, blues, and Americana songs that would rival Bruce Springsteen. They were even featured in Kerrang! as one of their hottest bands of 2019 alongside SWMRS, Jesus Piece, and I Don’t Know How But They Found Me, who are Prenatt’s Picks veterans. Cold Years’s debut comes out May 8.

Marquee Grand

Hometown: Buffalo, NY

Out Now: Marquee Grand – EP (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Boys Like Girls, The Dangerous Summer, This Providence

While we might be living in the 2020s now, Buffalo alt-rock quartet Marquee Grand are living in the 2000s. Their retro style breathes life into the genre, showing us what alt-rock has been missing for quite some time. Sounding like a cross between Cute Is What We Aim For and Jimmy Eat World, Marquee Grand are ringing in a new era for the genre. And it seems to be working for them well, since they did sell out the Rec Room, becoming the first local band to do so. They’ve played with Dashboard Confessional, Davey Muise And The Sons Of Zero, and Welles, and soon will take the stage to open for Fernway’s EP release show at Buffalo Iron Works, as well as Alternative Buffalo’s Kerfuffle Announcement Party with New Politics and Michigander on Thursday, March 26, at Babeville. Next month they’ll head into the studio with Paul Levitt (All Time Low, Emarosa, Senses Fail) to work on new music.

Stage Moms

Hometown: Moundsville, WV

Out Now: Long Drives & Late Nights – EP (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Crucial Dudes, Handguns, Polar Bear Club

On last year’s Prenatt’s Picks list I talked about a duo called Hightail Home. Well, one of their members, Grayson Prince, has another band called Stage Moms. The West Virginian group, featuring vocalist Gage Vota, guitarists Prince and Drew Freeman, bassist Adham Bobes, and drummer Deion Schultz, are putting an aggressive twist to pop punk, nearly teetering on the side of hardcore. Fun and heavy, Stage Moms are a band to be on your radar, especially if you love Four Year Strong and Comeback Kid. If you’re not hooked yet, they shot a music video inside of a Taco Bell. Do what you must with that information.

telltale

Telltale

Hometown: Richmond, VA

Out Now: Breathe – Single (SharpTone)

For Fans Of: The Blackout, The Story So Far, Trash Boat

On their newest single “Breathe,” Richmond pop-punkers Telltale add a splash of post-hardcore and post-grunge to their sound, and it’s a welcoming change. But if this new single is showing us the direction they’re going, then it’s a step in the right direction. In the three years since forming, Telltale have released two killer EPs, their newest one Timeless Youth came out on SharpTone Records (Bleeding Through, Heart Of Gold, Polaris) last year. They’ve hit the road with Settle Your Scores, Forever Came Calling, Afterlife, Point North, and Broadside. Their game plan for 2020 is to release new music and tour more.

Florida Man

Hometown: Charleston, SC

Out Now: Tropical Depression (Spartan)

For Fans Of: Hot Snakes, Queens Of The Stone Age, These Arms Are Snakes

They’re not even from Florida! Post-hardcore act Florida Man are as crazy as their name’s based on. Gritty, loud, and in your face, the South Carolina noise punk quartet are ready to attack. Made up of vocalist Jim O’Connor, guitarist Andrew Barnes, bassist CJ DeLuca, and drummer Jonathan Peace, the four friends have been active in their local scenes before combining to make Florida Man. They’ve performed with Caravela, ’68, and Cruel Hand. Look out for Florida Man, or else you might get hurt. P.S.: I’ve been dying to put these guys on this list ever since I wrapped up last year’s.

My Kid Brother

Hometown: Leesburg, VA

Out Now: Native Tongue – Single (Fearless)

For Fans Of: Cage The Elephant, Edward Sharpe And The Magnetic Zeros, The Mowgli’s

Originally known as Kid Brother, My Kid Brother have become a beloved band in their hometown of Leesburg, VA. Now signed with Fearless Records (The Almost, Kill The Lights, The Plot In You,) they’re eager to show the world what they’re made of. Focused on originality and genuine lyricism, MKB blend in the best elements of rock ‘n’ roll, folk, blues, and indie together to create something brand new. So far, they have one album under their belt: 2017’s Baltimore Street Rat. Let’s see what 2020 brings to MKB.

Queen Of Jeans

Hometown: Philadelphia, PA

Out Now: if you’re not afraid, i’m not afraid (Topshelf)

For Fans Of: Angel Olsen, Field Mouse, Ratboys

Made up of “2 gay vegans + 1 beautiful boy omnivore,” Queen Of Jeans are the face of the genre known as crockpot pop. Using retro guitars and dreamy melodies, the Philly trio will easily hypnotize you with their sound and will get you hooked in mere seconds. Billboard said about the trio, “Queen Of Jeans are the band you didn’t know you were missing, shimmying around your ears with vibrant three-part harmonies and ‘60s girl group and doo-wop hooks you don’t hear on your typical punk rock bill.” They’ve performed with The Menzingers, Circa Survive, Balance And Composure, Pianos Become The Teeth, and Citizen. QOJ will be on the road next month with Movements and Teenage Wrist.

Spanning artists in genres like rap, pop-punk, electronic, post-hardcore, rock, and acoustic, Prenatt’s Picks will show you the finest acts to check out.

This is part two of five. If you didn’t read the previous list, click here.

Without further delay, let’s start the list!

itoldyouiwouldeatyou

Hometown: London, UK

Out Now: Oh Dearism (Alcopop!/Failure By Design/Beth Shalom)

For Fans Of: Pianos Become The Teeth, Taking Back Sunday, The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die

If you weren’t aware, I’m a sucker for bands with long or odd names. Case in point: London’s emo/indie-punk septet itoldyouiwouldeatyou checks off both boxes for me. The band breathe new life into the emo genre, doing things the genre hasn’t seen since Panic! At The Disco came into our lives in 2005. The septet are here to help queer people find themselves in this world (four of the seven members identify as they/them). As vocalist Joey Ashworth told NME, “Emo is a nasty genre. t’s an untrustworthy part of music history. But the way it was marketed means that a lot of kids who were queer, or other marginalised demographics, needed it to move forward. I see no reason why we can’t take those positive aspects, and cut the negative out, right now.” The emo septet’s debut Oh Dearism came out last year and was called “a solid debut for this upcoming emo troupe” by Discovered Magazine. The band have played shows with Jordaan Mason, Dikembe, and Delta Sleep, and will be touring with Hellogoodbye in May. They’ll also be performing at 2000trees Festival with As It Is, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, and Drug Church on Friday, July 12.

Winski

Hometown: Buffalo, NY

Out Now: Enola. – EP (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Just Surrender, The Spill Canvas, Yellowcard

Local pop-punk group Winski have successfully taken over the Western New York area. Now, they’re setting their sites for the rest of the world. The quartet have had numerous lineup changes since vocalist/guitarist Ed Slowinski (see where the name comes from?) turned his solo project into a band, currently consisting of guitarist Jason Arenos and drummer Joe Musial. Winski dropped their latest EP Enola. back in May 2018. They’ve done shows with SayWeCanFly, ASHES, Landon Tewers of The Plot In You, Metro Station, and I See Stars, as well as selling out several shows in the Queen City. As the band simply puts it, “nothing will stop Winski.”

Year Of The Knife

Hometown: Newark, DE

Out Now: Ultimate Aggression (Pure Noise)

For Fans Of: Harm’s Way, Jesus Piece, Vein

Pure Noise Records (Bearings, Hawthorne Heights, Less Than Jake) are well known for signing some heavy hitters. For example, the label’s home to First Blood, Rotting Out, Left Behind, Counterparts, and Sharptooth, a former Prenatt’s Picks artist. Now, they have Delaware straight edge group Year Of The Knife, a band who’ll kick your ass with their brutal, shredding riffs. YOTK formed in 2015 and consist of vocalist Tyler Mullen, guitarist Brandon Watkins, bassist Madison “Madi” Watkins (married to Brandon), and twin brothers drummer Andrew Kisielewski and guitarist Aaron Kisielewski. The hardcore group have toured with The Acacia Strain, Terror, Jesus Piece, Knocked Loose, and Backtrack, and have played shows with Eighteen Visions, Code Orange, Vein, Sanction, and Microwave. They’ve so far released three EPs, with two of them being released last year. The quintet’s new album Ultimate Aggression dropped in February.

Calling All Captains

Hometown: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Out Now: Nothing Grows Here – EP (Equal Vision)

For Fans Of: Carousel Kings, Like Pacific, Sleep On It

Let’s quote their Facebook. “Calling All Captains burst into the scene in 2014 and have since been tirelessly developing their sound amidst the newest wave of the genre, evoking elements of early 2000’s emo-infused pop punk to blend with their own brand of modern easycore angst. Their haunting lyrical sentiments and infectious melodies seldom fail to provoke a crowd amassed scream-a-long.” The five-year-old pop-punk act have done shows with Red City Radio, Seaway, Silverstein, Set It Off, and Bedroom Talk, now known as Youth Fountain. The boys signed with Albany, N.Y. based label Equal Vision Records (As Cities Burn, Gideon, Polyphia) last July and just dropped their second EP Nothing Grows Here in February. They’re currently on the road with Makari.

William Ryan Key

Hometown: Jacksonville, FL

Out Now: Virtue – EP (Lone Tree Recordings)

For Fans Of: Aaron West And The Roaring Twenties, Brian Fallon, Matt Pryor

Seriously, does this man really need an introduction? Well, if you are not in the know, William Ryan Key is Ryan Key from Yellowcard, the pop-punk band who went defunct in 2017 and gave us such classics like “Ocean Avenue”, “Lights And Sounds” and “For You, And Your Denial”. Since Yellowcard’s ending, he went solo and gave us two incredible EPs in 2018, and he also started producing music for acts like Selfish Things and Like Torches. Under this project, he toured with This Wild Life, Mayday Parade, and Alex Moses of Columbus, and is currently touring with Selfish Things and Cory Wells. If you’re a fan of William Fitzsimmons and This Wild Life, you’ll enjoy William Ryan Key.

LOKELLA

Hometown: Grand Rapids, MI

Out Now: Set To Flame – Single (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Circa Survive, Glassjaw, In This Moment

When the post-hardcore band Fine Fine Titans called it a day in 2016, LOKELLA rose from those ashes. Husband-wife duo Evan and Jennifer Bartlett called up friends guitarist Chris Bursley and drummer Josh Poel to make the spectacular LOKELLA, a word that’s German for famous warrior. And just like a warrior, they’re fierce and strike hard. The midwestern rock quartet have shared stages with Andrew W.K., Seether, and The Fall Of Troy. Their next EP Censory Overload comes out May 17.

Hometown: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Out Now: Letters To Our Former Selves (Pure Noise)

For Fans Of: Knuckle Puck, State Champs, Trash Boat

Known originally as Bedroom Talk, Canadian emo/pop-punk duo Youth Fountain are a new face in the scene. Composed of Tyler Zanon and Cody Muraro, YF have done so much in their short amount of time (YF were created in 2017). Pure Noise Records (Boston Manor, Four Year Strong, Sharptooth) delivered their self-titled EP in July and their full-length Letters To Our Former Selves earlier this month. That album was #11 on the Billboard Heatseekers list when it first came out. They even toured with Can’t Swim, Abandoned By Bears, and Demon In Me. Currently they’re on tour for their debut album and will be hitting up St. Paul, Minn., Thursday, March 28 at Caydence Records.

Author & Punisher

Hometown: San Diego, CA

Out Now: Beastland (Relapse)

For Fans Of: Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, Sunn O)))

Dark, harsh, and unsettling. These are the three words that sum up Author & Punisher, the industrial dooom/drone stage name of Tristan Shone. Once you hear any song by him, whether it be the skin crawling “Terrorbird”, the uneasy “Nihil Strength”, or the nearly seven minute creep show known as “Callous And Hoof”, you know you won’t be catching sleep tonight. This one man show is here to scare you with speaker-blowing bass and harsh, droning dub machines. Forget fearing Freddy Kruger, fear Shone. He’s the real man of nightmares. Sweet dreams.

Church Girls

Hometown: Philadelphia, PA

Out Now: Cycles – EP (Chatterbot)

For Fans Of: Angel Olson, Speedy Ortiz, Waxahatchee

Philly based post-punk quartet Church Girls have been going nonstop since forming in 2014. The band, consisting of drummer Michael Liszka, bassist Vince Vullo, guitarist Joseph Wright (what’s up man?), and guitarist/vocalist Mariel Beaumont, are, as their Facebook page puts it, “on a quest to tap into listeners’ emotional marrow by lyrically confessing a resistance to growing up, espousing a tendency towards self-destruction, showing the pains of communication, and celebrating the ways we work to become better humans a little at a time.” With muddled guitars and hard-hitting drums, the indie group go hard on each release, including their current EP Cycles dropping back two months ago on indie label Chatterbot Records (California Cousins, Hit Like A Girl, Origami Angel). Besides going hard on their sound, the band also go hard on touring, constantly playing shows in the U.S. and even the U.K. They’ll be playing Pouzza Fest in Montréal this may with Against Me!, War On Women, and 50 Shades Of Punk Rock.

dying in designer

Hometown: Chicago, IL

Out Now: PTSD – Single (Hopeless)

For Fans Of: Boyfriendz, Lil Peep, Wicca Phase Springs Eternal

2018 was a shit year for the emo rapper dying in designer, aka Bobby O’Brien. A toxic relationship nearly led him down the path of suicide, yet he powered on and turned the pain into gut-wrenching music fueled by 808s and breakdowns. The Windy City rapper has been fueling those emotions into some pretty fine music, fine enough to get him signed to beloved pop-punk label Hopeless Records (Emarosa, New Found Glory, Sum 41) in 2019, making O’Brien the first rapper on the label. He’s done collaborations with artists like dubstep musician Riot Ten, rapper Larcin, and trap artists TERRA BLVCK and DËKAY. dying in designer will be performing at So What?! Music Festival on Saturday, April 27 with Of Mice & Men, Wage War, and ERRA.

I Set My Friends On Fire’s Original Version Of “Astral Rejection” Is Coming Out

I Set My Friends On Fire’s Original Version Of “Astral Rejection” Is Coming Out

After years of waiting, I Set My Friends On Fire and their former label Epitaph Records (Defeater, The Frights, Pianos Become The Teeth) will release the original version of their second studio album Astral Rejection.

Yes that’s right, the original version we got in 2011 isn’t the one the band wanted out on store shelfs.

In an interview with DEAD PRESS!, vocalist Matt Mehana said:

“Basically the label heard it and said ‘This isn’t like the first album at all, it’s more mature.’ They wanted more hip-hop. Ironically, back in that time they wanted more hip-hop shit, but I wasn’t writing the music at that time, but I knew what they wanted. I said ‘I know what you want, but I can’t write yet.’ [Former multi-instrumentalist] Nabil [Moo] wrote all of that music. He would go into his room for like two weeks and write, and more power to him because I know how it is to write now and I can’t write with anybody around me, so I know what he felt at that time. At the time I was confused, and was like ‘Why would the hell would he go into a room by himself and write, and not let me be a part of the music?’

But, then I realised. Sometimes when I explain things it’s really out there. I don’t know why, I just explain things really bizarrely. So, imagine somebody like me trying to explain a part to somebody who plays guitar, and I know nothing about music theory or anything like that. It probably gets really annoying after a while. I don’t know, it was weird, because on the first album I would hum him some riffs and stuff like that, and he would play them and boom – we’d have written a song. I don’t know why he wanted to change the approach to writing on the second one. I think it was just stress and pressure to be honest with you, because we were deeper in the game, and once you release a first album there’s more pressure for the second one to be better.

So, he wrote and wrote, and then he would come back into the studio and show me a song, and my selfish ass would hear the song and be like ‘Mmm, I don’t like it.’ I was just being honest, but we were also running out of time, so he’d get really frustrated and go back and write, then come back with something else. I didn’t want to tell him that stuff sucked again, but there were moments where the music was really good, and I did what I had to do over the music with my vocals. I just did what I had to do because I had no control over the music, and so when Epitaph heard it they even dissed me. They were like ‘Eh, your voice sounds like the guy from 311.’ I was like ‘What? What are you talking about? Alright, whatever.’ Obviously Nabil was super stressed already with writing the album, and if someone rejects the whole album he’s going to be like ‘Fuck this shit’ and so he left.

When that was done, basically Epitaph Records wanted to close the book right then and there, and I was like ‘No, please, give me one more chance. I’ll write it with Travis from From First To Last and a few other dudes.’ So, I re-wrote Astral Rejection – the one that actually came out – named it the same thing, re-used a lot of old lyrics, and made a new album that sounded a little more like us. That doesn’t mean that I don’t think that what we originally wrote was kinda cool, especially for the time. I go back and listen to it now and again and I’m like ‘Damn, this shit actually isn’t that bad. I can’t believe we even thought of some of this shit.’ That’s basically what happened. That’s the whole story of Astral Rejection.”

But now both Epitaph and ISMFOF have apparently worked things out and the original version of the album will be coming out on March 29. The album will be called O.G. Astral Rejection or Original Astral Rejection. Check out the Instagram story made by the band below.

No photo description available.

ISMFOF are currently working on follow-ups for Astral Rejection titled Caterpillar Sex (their third album) and a currently untitled fourth album. They released their latest song called “Don’t Take Me For Pomegranate” with emo-rapper Lil Lotus last September.

La Dispute Release First Two Songs Off Upcoming Album

La Dispute Release First Two Songs Off Upcoming Album

La Dispute have finally unveiled the first two tracks off their upcoming fourth record and first with Epitaph Records (Bad Suns, Millencolin, Too Close To Touch) Panorama.

The two tracks are the album opener “Rose Quartz”, an instrumental track that lasts a minute, and “Fulton Street I”, the nearly five minute long track that sounds like old school La Dispute. Vocalist Jordan Dreyer told NPR the meanings behind the songs, saying:

“‘Rose Quartz’ is a bright white light, then the low hum of tires on a country highway; ‘Fulton Street I’ is two heads in the car turning quietly at passing landmarks, plywood monuments with plastic flowers and the stories that populate the stretch of road between two places. Together, they’re the first two tracks on a record born from long drives like that, between a new and an old home, that takes a wide-angled shot of a city and just outside of it. How events there linger on in the memory of all those involved, carrying the characters off in thoughts of grief and healing to other planes and other histories. Everything on the record started with that image — and with the feeling of drifting off in thought toward different worlds — and with this piece, which was written largely in one setting after having scrapped nearly a full album’s worth of material.”

Both “Rose Quartz” and “Fulton Street I” are available now to listen to. A music video for the songs can be viewed here. Parnorama is the band’s first album since 2015’s Rooms Of The House. The album was produced by La Dispute and Will Yip (Circa Survive, Eisley, Pianos Become The Teeth). The new album comes out March 22.
