Where Are They Now?: Checking Up On 25 Bands From Last Year’s Prenatt’s Picks List (2018 Edition)

Where Are They Now?: Checking Up On 25 Bands From Last Year’s Prenatt’s Picks List (2018 Edition)

Back in December, I wrote a massive article about half of the artists I covered on my first ever Prenatt’s Picks lists with The Record. I wanted to look at where some of those bands and musicians went. Some died (Lil Peep), some fell apart (Home Sweet Home), and tons were accused of sexual allegations (Pinegrove, Sorority Noise, PWR BTTM).

Now that it’s 2019, I can see what happened to those who I covered on last year’s lists. Let’s check up on them.

Settle Your Scores

2018 was a big year for the easycore group. They dropped their second album Better Luck Tomorrow on SharpTone Records (As I Lay Dying, Holding Absence, Miss May I), toured with We Were Sharks, Bilmuri, and Nominee, and…then got dropped by SharpTone. Now independent again, the group are picking up right where they left off. So far this year they’ve dropped an electric version of “My Reason To Come Back Home” called “My Reason To Come Back Home 2: Electric Boogaloo”, started recording new music, and toured with Calling All Captains, who were on this year’s Prenatt’s Picks list. And yes, they’re still shitposting. Never change, fellas.

Awaken I Am

No one should have gone through what Awaken I Am went through in 2018. Last May, guitarist Connor Verner-Oakley was killed in a car accident. This tragedy would help the band grow stronger, creating the EP The Beauty In Tragedy, which honored their fallen brother. They also got a new vocalist Jimmy Stevenson who replaced Adam Douglas. Since being featured, they’ve toured with SECRETS, Escape The Fate, and Slaves, dropped an EP, and just wrapped up a headlining tour in their native Australia with I The Mighty.

nothing,nowhere.

He blew up quick. The New England based emo rapper had a successful 2018 and so far a fantastic 2019. nothing, nowhere. dropped his Fueled By Ramen (A Day To Remember, The Front Bottoms, Lights) debut record Ruiner last April, dropped a collaboration with clothing label Famous Stars And Straps, toured with Fall Out Boy, Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, and is currently on the road with grandson. A collaboration EP with Blink-182’s Travis Barker called Bloodlust is coming out Friday, September 27.

7 Minute Martians

The Ohio based pop-punk group 7 Minute Martians seemed to have had a great year. I wrote, “I really hope the world pays attention to these guys, they sound amazing.” And it seemed that people were paying attention. They ended up doing shows with The Ataris, Keep Flying, and a former Prenatt’s Picks list band Mascots. Minus the departure of their drummer Nick Neumeister, it looks like 7MM are getting there.

MAKEOUT

MAKEOUT

Earlier this year, the future for MAKEOUT was blurry. Just a year prior, they appeared on the Vans Warped Tour, toured with Cute Is What We Aim For and Icon For Hire, and were riding high with the success of their album The Good Life. Then January came and their lead vocalist announced he was done with tour life and quit, leaving the rest of the group unsure of their future. That was until just last week when former American Idol contestant Kyle Dee and ex-Sleep On It bassist AJ Khan joined the group. Expect big things for MAKEOUT in 2020.

Mt. Joy

Folk group Mt. Joy enjoyed their 2018, playing various festivals along with artists like Paul McCartney, Rise Against, CHVRCHES, The Hives, and Modest Mouse, dropping their debut self-titled record, toured throughout the country and Europe, and even performed on TV twice (CBS This Morning and Jimmy Kimmel Live!). And it seems their 2020 is looking bright since they’re opening up for The Lumineers on their world tour. Not bad.

The Frights

Indie punks The Frights may have started off as a prank, but their success ain’t nothing to joke about. They dropped their third record (and first with Epitaph Records) Hypochondriac last August, appearing at Riot Fest last fall, playing Coachella in April, made a live album, and so much more. Just yesterday they announced they’ll be on the second Songs That Saved My Life compilation covering Modest Mouse’s “Tiny Cities Made Of Ashes” which comes out November 8. Later this fall the band will be opening up for The Story So Far and Matt And Kim.

Sharptooth

Last year treated Sharptooth well. With a spot on the final Vans Warped Tour as well as shows with Cane Hill, Snapcase, Knocked Loose, Propagandhi, and Senses Fail, the Baltimore based hardcore group showed they’re a force to be reckoned with. 2019 so far has been great, with the band touring with As It Is, Comeback Kid, and Obey The Brave, performing at Groezrock in Germany, and were called one of the 50 best American hardcore bands right now by Kerrang!. Later this year they’ll appear on the charity comp Songs That Saved My Life Vol. 2 covering Anti-Flag’s “Die For The Government” and will hit the road with Limbs and Wristmeetrazor.

I Don’t Know How But They Found Me

The new wave/indie pop duo iDKHOW blew the fuck up in 2018 after Fearless Records (Capstan, I Prevail, Set It Off) signed the duo and dropped their debut EP 1981 Extended Play. They opened for Deaf Havana last fall, appeared at Riot Fest, Reading And Leeds, and Slam Dunk this year, and even appeared on the cover of Alternative Press back in January. Let’s see what 2020 has planned for the duo.

We Were Sharks

The Ottawa based pop-punk group gained some attention after Victory Records (Abandoned By Bears, Broadside, Cro-Mags) released their debut full-length Lost Touch in early 2018. They got to do one day of Warped Tour, tour with Settle Your Scores and Abandoned By Bears, and by the year’s end, have Lost Touch reach over 3.1 million streams on Spotify. Fast forward to 2019 and they’re now independent again. WWS have currently toured with Summer Wars and later this year will be at The Fest in Florida and tour with Assuming We Survive and Never Loved.

The Millennium

If you weren’t aware, the Midwestern pop-rock band The Millennium called it a day back in November, lasting only four years. In that span of time, they played with 3OH!3, The Wrecks, and State Champs, did Warped Tour, and won Ernie Ball’s Warped Tour Battle Of The Bands twice.

lovelytheband

Born from the ashes of Oh Honey, alt-pop trio lovelytheband have been riding high after the success of their single “Broken” back in late 2017. The next two years would have the band drop their debut album Finding It Hard To Smile, doing shows with Walk The Moon,  Jimmy Eat World, and Vance Joy, and partook in an event run by Pepsi for the return of college football in Cleveland. Who knows what the new year has in store for the trio.

L.I.F.T

The emo rap group L.I.F.T aka Love In Future Times were having a promising 2018. That all came crashing down prior to appearing at the inaugural Sad Summer Fest with The Wonder Years and Just Friends when the group were allegedly grabbing fans inappropriately during photo ops. They’ve since went M.I.A. and maybe it’s for the best.

Fernway

The departure of a member isn’t gonna slow down the Buffalo alt-rock group. Now armed with bassist Alec Dub, the band are ready to take on 2020 with new material. They just dropped a new song called “Half-Life” back in August. Before Halloween, they’ll be playing their second annual Halloween show at Buffalo Iron Works with Ugly Sun, Post Prom, and Grace Greenan.

Dead Girls Academy

Rock outfit Dead Girls Academy have been doing well since releasing Alchemy last summer on Victory Records. Last summer they had the privilege of playing the final Vans Warped Tour and touring with Falling In Reverse. This year they’ve been constantly on the road, playing festivals like Welcome To Rockville, touring with John 5, and their first headlining tour. Later this fall DGA will tour with P.O.D. and Alien Ant Farm.

Color Killer

The youngest band ever to play Warped Tour did so much last year. Besides doing Warped Tour, they got to open up for The Mighty Mighty Bosstones during their annual Hometown Throwdown, added an additional guitarist Dylan, and dropped their debut album Generation Z independently last July. This year they released three songs, one being a cover of Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline”, played with their idols The Queers, and even have a skateboard, yes, a skateboard. Only 5 remain. Buy one.

*repeat repeat

A year ago I did photography for their show with Our Lady Peace. A year later I did the same thing at their headlining show at Buffalo Iron Works. And they remembered me. Since the last I wrote about them they dropped their sophomore album Glazed, performed at several festivals, and are currently touring with The Black Keys and Modest Mouse. It’s only up from here.

PKEW PKEW PKEW

Canadian punks PKEW PKEW PKEW were doing well in 2018, but when 2019 struck, big things happened. They dropped their second album Optimal Lifestyles on Dine Alone Records (Alexisonfire, JEFF The Brotherhood, Single Mothers), appeared on Late Night With Seth Meyers, toured with Prenatt’s Picks 2019 band Spanish Love Songs, and played festivals like Riot Fest and Riverfest Elora. Wonder what 2020 will bring to the PKEWx3 boys.

Calpurnia

Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard’s band Calpurnia did so much since I last wrote about them. Their debut EP Scout came out last year and they dropped a new song “Cell” back in March, appeared at Riot Fest last year and Shaky Knees Music Festival this year, and appeared in a Weezer music video. Sadly they cancelled a bunch of shows this summer, including an appearance at Lollapalooza. Hope they get better.

Story Untold

Canadian pop-punkers Story Untold dropped their debut album Waves on Hopeless Records (Emarosa, Neck Deep, Tiny Moving Parts) last year, which gave them several opportunities like a spot on the final Vans Warped Tour and touring with ROAM and With Confidence. This year, the band toured with Between You & Me and MAKEOUT and even got to play the Slam Dunk Festival. Expect their sophomore album sometime next year.

ASHES

Buffalo based metalcore group ASHES went through some changes this year, such as vocalist Felix Cruz III leaving. Besides playing a show earlier this year, they’ve been quite dormant. Unclean vocalist Jack Friend did launch a side project called Cold Camp last year and released their latest EP Holy Grail earlier this month. Check it out.

Varials

The Philly metalcore quintet are loving it at the moment. Just this year, they played both days of Warped Tour’s Atlantic City shows, touring with Sylar and Gideon, kicked ass at So What?! Music Festival, and just announced their new album In Darkness is coming out October 11 via Fearless Records. They’re touring with Counterparts and Stray From The Path this October through November.

Bearings

Last time we saw Bearings the Canadian band had their guitarist Tyler Nickel leave the group prior to their tour with Less Than Jake and Four Year Strong and were making their debut album Blue In The Dark, which came out last October on Pure Noise Records (Chamber, Meg & Dia, Take Offense). Fast forward to 2019 and the group have toured with Set It Off in Europe, co-headlined a tour in Canada with Belmont, and played Groezrock in Germany. Later this year they’ll play Four Year Strong’s Christmas show with Citizen, bloom., and The Movielife. They also seem to be up to something.

Hi, Mom!

The Sacramento pop-punk trio have been awfully quiet in 2019, just recently announcing a local showcase on Thursday, October 17. Earlier this year, they dropped their debut album Songs For Me. Maybe next year will bring more activity for the band.

Hobo Johnson & The LoveMakers

They blew up. I could simply leave it at that but you wouldn’t be satisfied. Since writing about them, they signed with major label Reprise Records (Deftones, Family Of The Year, Green Day), dropped their second album The Fall Of Hobo Johnson, played on Late Night With Seth Meyers, appeared at Reading And Leeds, Bonnaroo, and Lollapalooza, toured the UK and Ireland with Cavetown, played NPR (finally), and will playing a North American tour with Mom Jeans.. So yeah, they’re doing well.

This is part five of five. If you didn’t read the previous list, click here.

Without further delay, let’s finish the list!

Afterlife.jpg

Afterlife

Hometown: West Palm Beach, FL

Out Now: Breaking Point (Hopeless)

For Fans Of: Cane Hill, KoЯn, Linkin Park

Nu-metal came back in a hard way a few years ago. With the rise of acts like Cane Hill, Issues, and Sylar in the past couple years, newer bands in the genre are able to break into the world easier. That’s how Floridian quartet Afterlife were able to thrive. Created behind closed doors in 2015, vocalist Tyler Levenson, guitarist Andrew McGuire, drummer Luke Walkinshaw and bassist Tristan Edwards, have been quickly making a name for themselves, signing with Stay Sick Recordings (The Ansible, Bodysnatcher, Notions) in 2016 before eventually hitting their highest mark by joining Hopeless Records (The Dangerous Summer, Lotus Eater, Story Untold) last fall. Their debut record Breaking Point came out in January, featuring the single “Throat”, which went #1 on SiriusXM Octane. Afterlife have toured with Oceans Ate Alaska, Ice Nine Kills, and Like Moths To Flames. They’ll be playing the So What?! Music Festival on Saturday, April 27, with Crown The Empire, Dead American, and Varials.

Ithaca

Hometown: London, UK

Out Now: The Language Of Injury (Holy Roar)

For Fans Of: Bleeding Through, I Killed The Prom Queen, Norma Jean

Ithaca aren’t just another metal band about breakdowns and scaring conservative Christians, they’re a band with a heavy political message. That’s why the London quintet were involved in the first ever World Metal Congress back in March. Yes, it’s a real thing. Frontwoman Djamila Azzouz is sick of the way women are treated in the metal scene, and she’s making her voice heard in anyway. As Revolver put it, ” Cohesive and passionate, driven and furious, yet never looking like they’re having anything but the best time, Ithaca are poised to further invigorate the metallic hardcore scene away from their home base of London…” Their debut album The Language Of Injury came out this year via Holy Roar Records (Apologies, I Have None, Group Of Man, We Never Learned To Live). Ithaca will appear at ArcTanGent on Thursday, August 15, with Coheed And Cambria, Zeal & Ardor, and Polyphia.

Spanish Love Songs

Hometown: Los Angeles, CA

Out Now: Losers – Single (Pure Noise)

For Fans Of: Elway, Iron Chic, The Menzingers

Last week Pure Noise Records (Boston Manor, Graduating Life, Selfish Things) reintroduced to the world the indie punk group Spanish Love Songs. Formed five years ago, the West Coast sextet have been working hard, dropping two albums on two different labels, touring with Hot Water Music, Iron Chic, and Typesetter, and doing shows with Good Riddance, Red City Radio, and The Flatliners. Spanish Love Songs will be playing festivals like Pouzza Fest, FEST 18, and Camp Anarchy later this year.

Not Ur Girlfrenz

Hometown: Dallas, TX

Out Now: New Kids In America – EP (Frenzone)

For Fans Of: Bowling For Soup, Doll Skin, Veruca Salt

If you remember from last year’s list, I showed you a band called Color Killer. I said that the group were the youngest band to ever appear at Warped Tour. Well, that’s both right and wrong. They are the youngest band ever to appear, but they aren’t the youngest touring band on the festival. That honor goes to Texan pop-rock trio Not Ur Girlfrenz. Consisting of vocalist/guitarist Liv Haynes (14), bassist Gigi Haynes (12), and drummer Maren Alford (14), the band played the touring festival for four days. They also got the attention of Bowling For Soup’s Jaret Reddick, who not only took them on tour with BFS but also produced their latest EP New Kids In America. The girls have done shows with Set It Off, The Dollyrots, and The Nixons. Not Ur Girlfrenz will appear at Warped Tour’s 25th anniversary show in Atlantic City, N.J., with Blink-182, Glassjaw, and Stacked Like Pancakes. Keep your eyes peeled for Not Ur Girlfrenz.

Out Now: Hand In Hand – Single (UNFD)

For Fans Of: CrazyEightyEight, Hands Like Houses, Too Close To Touch

The past five years have been incredible for British alt-rock/post-hardcore act Dream State. Just hours to the group’s performance at Reading in 2017, the band signed with UNFD (Frank Iero And The Future Violents, Limbs, While She Sleeps). Fortune has truly smiled upon the group. Since then, they released an EP in 2018, appeared on the charity comp Songs That Saved My Life with their rendition of Linkin Park’s “Crawling”, played festivals like Download, Slam Dunk, and 2000trees, won “Best British Breakthrough Act” at the Kerrang! Awards in 2018, and have toured with BABYMETAL, The Amity Affliction, and Neck Deep. 2019 will keep Dream State busy, having appearances at Groezrock with Beach Slang, Reading and Leeds with PUP, and 2000trees with You Me At Six.

All Out

Hometown: Long Island, NY

Out Now: Violent – Single (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Broadside, New Found Glory, We Were Sharks

Have you ever thought to yourself, “Damn. Do you know what pop-punk needs? Clouts and trap beats.” Well if you had that very specific thought, I give you All Out. The Long Island act blend in standard pop-punk elements with the stylings of Lil Dicky and Post Malone. With this bizarre paring, All Out have been able to share stages with Carousel Kings, Belmont, Abandoned By Bears, Keep Flying, and Capstan. They’re the band you didn’t think you needed in your life. All Out’s next show is Saturday, June 1, with Maybe Later.

The Sunday Sadness

Hometown: Bordeaux, France

Out Now: The Sunday Sadness (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: The 1975, BTS, Chase Atlantic

The Sunday Sadness are the living embodiment of vaporwave. The French dark-pop quartet are not only crossing music boundaries, but are also crossing country boundaries with their hypnotic sound. They’ve reached over 100,000 plays on Spotify back in November, dropped their debut self-titled EP in February, and played their first ever sold-out headlining show earlier this month. Looks like things are bright for these dark-pop boys. The Sunday Sadness will be embarking on a short run with As It Is and Our Last Night in France this summer.

Don’t Sleep

Hometown: Harrisburg, PA / Washington D.C.

Out Now: Bring The Light – Single (Reaper)

For Fans Of: Authority Zero, Gorilla Biscuits, Minor Threat

Even though hardcore punk quintet Don’t Sleep have only been around since 2017, all of the members have been doing music with other groups prior to their formation. The five good friends are made up of vocalist Dave Smalley (Dag Nasty, Down By Law, ALL, and DYS), and members of The Commercials, Admiral, and Junction. So far the group have dropped two EPs, done gigs with Murphy’s Law, Face To Face, and Sick Of It All, and played the final cross-country Vans Warped Tour in Baltimore. Their debut full-length album, produced by Grammy nominated producers Carson Slovak and Grant McFarland (Galactic Empire, The Last Ten Seconds Of Life, Polaris), will be coming out sometime this year via their new label Victory Records (Awaken I Am, Dead Girls Academy, Reverend Horton Heat).

Times Like These

Hometown: Long Island, NY

Out Now: Take Me Home – Single (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: 5 Seconds Of Summer, All Time Low, Story Untold

When people think of the music scene in Long Island, everyone thinks of Taking Back Sunday, Brand New, The Movielife, Envy On The Coast, and Glassjaw. What you didn’t expect was a Top 40-esque pop-rock band called Times Like These. Named after the popular Foo Fighters song, the quartet put a fresh coat of paint on pop-punk. While they might sound like early 5 Seconds Of Summer and current All Time Low, that hasn’t stopped them from doing shows with Oh, Weatherly, Handguns, With Confidence, Seaway, and Centerfolds. They even did a song with Drew Dijorio of Stray From The Path. Times Like These will be touring with The Second After in May.

Inner Outlines

Hometown: Jacksonville, IL

Out Now: Perspective. (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Carousel Kings, In Her Own Words, Major League

Born in a basement in Central Illinois, Inner Outlines were created in 2014 and had one goal in mind: not following in anyone’s footsteps but rather seeking what their heroes sought. The alt-rock band were influenced by an eclectic group of artists such as Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Sevendust, Goo Goo Dolls, and Pierce The Veil. When their bassist Billie Smith passed away in 2014, the band continued on their journey of saying that nothing was impossible. With that mission in mind, they were able to drop an EP and two full-lengths, their latest being 2019’s Perspective. independently. They’ve shared stages with Breaking Benjamin, Sleeping With Sirens, Forever Came Calling, The Plot In You, Alter Bridge, Pierce The Veil, Tear Out The Heart, Keep Flying, Avatar, and Rookie Of The Year. Spanish Love Songs Sign To Pure Noise Records, Drop New Song

Spanish Love Songs Sign To Pure Noise Records, Drop New Song

Indie punks Spanish Love Songs are stepping up in the music world, officially announcing that they’re now part of the Pure Noise Records (Drug Church, Graduating Life, Youth Fountain) family.

The L.A. quintet broke the news earlier today, saying that joining the California based label is “crazy.” To celebrate their signing, Spanish Love Songs dropped a brand new track titled “Losers” out now. It’ll also be available as a seven-inch record on April 26.

Spanish Love Songs formed in 2014 and have dropped two albums, 2015’s Giant Sings The Blues on Wiretap Records (The Burnt Tapes, Radar State, Wolves & Wolves & Wolves & Wolves) and 2018’s Schmaltz on A-F Records (Anti-Flag, The Homeless Gospel Choir, Lee Corey Oswald). They’ve toured with Hot Water Music, Iron Chic, and Typesetter, and have done shows with Good Riddance, Red City Radio, and The Flatliners.

A-F Records even congratulated the band on a post, saying how they wish SLS “ALL the best in their new home” and how Schmaltz “will always hold a special place in A-F history!” They also wrote, “Nothing makes us happier than to see a band grow on account of their hard work and successes! Our dear friends in Spanish Love Songs have found their way into the hearts of many, and it’s been an honor to work with them over the passed year.”

The band are currently touring Europe with PKEW PKEW PKEW. Later this year, they’ll appear at Camp Anarchy with NOFX, Pouzza Fest with Strung Out, Obenuse Fest with Bad Cop / Bad Cop, Groezrock with Emmure, and FEST 18 with Jawbreaker.

Dropkick Murphys, Neck Deep, Bowling For Soup, Mest, More To Play Groezrock 2019

Dropkick Murphys, Neck Deep, Bowling For Soup, Mest, More To Play Groezrock 2019

After turning 2018’s festival into an indoor show, the great European punk rock festival Groezrock will be returning back to the outdoors with a stellar lineup.

Celtic punks Dropkick Murphys will headline the 27th Groezrock in Meerhout, Belgium, along with British pop-punkers Neck Deep, hardcore group Sharptooth, Ohioan shoegaze act Citizen, ex-Turbonegro vocalist Hank Von Hell, old school pop-punkers Mest, Swedish punks Millencolin, Canadian hardcore band Comeback Kid, German metalcore troupe Eskimo Callboy, an exclusive mainland European performance by pop-punk legends Bowling For Soup, and many more to be announced at a later time.

The festival took a year off outside due to people losing interest over the years. “It has become increasingly hard for some people involved with the festival to give it their all year after year,” the festival wrote in a statement back in 2017. To make up for that, the festival turned their outdoor festival into an indoor show that featured Reel Big Fish, Anti-Flag, Trash Boat, Culture Abuse, and others.

Groezrock started back in 1992 and was originally a rock/pop festival before eventually turning into the punk rock festival that people know and love. Bands who’ve played Groezrock in the past include AFI, Ten Foot Pole, The Bouncing Souls, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Bad Religion, Terror, Strung Out, Coheed And Cambria, Me First And The Gimme Gimmes, Motion City Soundtrack, Face To Face, Emery, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Piebald, The Ghost Inside, Emmure, La Dispute, The Swellers, Four Year Strong, Deftones, and more.

Next year’s festival will take place April 26 and 27. Tickets are available to purchase from the festival’s website.
