The Most Anticipated Albums Of 2022 (Part Four)

The Most Anticipated Albums Of 2022 (Part Four)

Here we are. The final part of our most anticipated albums of the year. Please enjoy part 4!

This is part four of four. If you haven’t read part three yet, check it out here.

2021 was the year many musicians showed us the works they created during the 2020 pandemic. And since the pandemic is still (somewhat) raging around the world, it’s giving musicians even more time to perfect their craft.

In 2022, we’re getting several great albums some several great bands and artists, but out of all the albums that are coming out this year, these are the ones you need to keep your eyes on. Here are the most anticipated albums of 2022, in no particular order.

SECRETS

Album: The Collapse (Velocity)

Release Date: 6/10

Back in the early 2010s, SECRETS were just one of the many post-hardcore bands that simply existed among the sea of run-of-the-mill sounding bands who played Warped Tour. A decade has passed and so has that style. What’s a post-hardcore band to do? Toss everything away and become heavy af. That is what the now metalcore band are trying to accomplish on their new record The Collapse, coming out today on Velocity Records (And So I Watch You From Afar, D.R.U.G.S., The Villa). And from what’s been heard so far, they’ve became the band they’ve always wanted to be.

The Wonder Years

Album: TBA (Hopeless)

Release Date: TBA

Ready to be sad again? Philly’s greatest sad boys have graduated to sad men with their upcoming seventh studio album. The Wonder Years have gifted us two beautiful songs: the emotional “Oldest Daughter” and the slow burn semi-acoustic track “Summer Clothes”. Both are beautiful to say the least. No word yet on a release date but the band promised that it will drop later this year via Hopeless Records (Fame On Fire, Scene Queen, Vaines).

Lizzo

Album: Special (Atlantic/Nice Life)

Release Date: 7/15

It’s about damn time. Prince’s protégé has returned to us with new material, the first since her breakthrough third album Cuz I Love You back in 2019. And just as the name says it, Special is truly special, according to Lizzo. “I think that the music really is going to speak for itself,” she told Apple’s Zane Lowe. “I’m writing songs about love from every direction, and I hope that I can turn a little bit of the fear that’s been running rampant in this world, energetically into love. That’s the point. I had a lot of fear, and I had to do the work on myself, and this music is some of that work in turning that fear into love. I hope that when people listen to this album, it makes their day just a little bit better, a little bit more filled with love.” Let’s hope this album is truly worthy to be named special.

Panic! At The Disco

Album: Viva Las Vengeance (Fueled By Ramen/DCD2/Warner)

Release Date: 8/19

Twitter’s most hated popstar is back. Love him or hate him, Brendon Urie has proven time and time again that he can do no wrong music wise, and his seventh album, Viva Las Vengeance, will hopefully show us that he hasn’t lost touch in his four-year absence. Working with producers Jake Sinclair (Fall Out Boy, New Politics, Weezer) and Mike Viola (Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness, Fall Out Boy, Mandy Moore), the album dives into Urie’s childhood and relationships. Viva Las Vengeance is a “cinematic musical journey about the fine line between taking advantage of your youth, seizing the day and burning out.” Rage against the dying of the light, P!ATD.

The Devil Wears Prada

Album: Color Decay (Solid State)

Release Date: 9/16

It took me decades to get into The Devil Wears Prada. The christian metalcore band have been growing stronger since their Warped Tour days, becoming giants in their genre. Now with their eighth record on the horizon, Color Decay, the band decided to test their growth and togetherness by recording the album in “remote hideaways” across Wisconsin and California with keyboardist Jonathan Gering sitting in the producer’s chair. They said in a press release that “collaborating closely” brought TDWP a “rich sonic architecture.” Color Decay drops September 16 on Solid State Records (Azusa, Fit For A King, Norma Jean).

Polyphia

Album: TBA (Rise)

Release Date: TBA

Oh who are we kidding? Album four is a myth. Everyone knows that. Or is it? Could this be the year that album four officially drops? Could be. The instrumental prog-rock quartet have been teasing fans about this mythical album for a bit, but guitarist Tim Henson did tell Alternative Press that it does exist. “The only hints that we give towards it are printed on merch drops with little texts on hoodies and stuff. It’ll say something like ‘album four is a myth,’ just to mess with people because they’ve been waiting so long, but it’s really interesting to watch our Spotify and our socials grow without us doing anything,” Henson said in an interview with the magazine. “Obviously, we’re doing a ton of things behind the scenes, but not putting anything out for anyone to grasp on to when they’re just rallying together with all the old stuff, it definitely feels good to know that we have a very starved fanbase waiting for us to drop [songs].” He did tease the appearances of an “OG goat guitar player” on the record (Steve Vai, perhaps?), “an OG goat rock singer”, and some “pretty well-known rappers and then lots of incredible instrumentalists.” Album four will hopefully drop this year on the band’s new label Rise Records (Covey, Flogging Molly, Royal Coda).

Travie McCoy

Album: Never Slept Better (Hopeless)

Release Date: 7/15

Twelve years have passed since Travie McCoy dropped his debut solo album Lazarus. In that span of time, his collaborator on his hit single “Billionaire”, Bruno Mars, became a superstar, reunited his old rap-rock band Gym Class Heroes before killing it off shortly before their appearance at Warped Tour’s 25th anniversary show, and signed with Hopeless Records. Now in the present day, he’s about to unleash his long-awaited second solo album Never Slept Better. Can he strike gold once more?

Porcupine Tree

Album: Closure/Continuation (Music For Nations)

Release Date: 6/24

British prog-rock legends Porcupine Tree blew everyones’ minds back in 2021 when they announced that they were reuniting for the first time in a decade. During that break, frontman Steven Wilson committed himself to his solo work with the rest of the band doing the same. The same day they reunited, the now trio (bassist Colin Edwin is continuing his solo endeavors) released a new song and announced their eleventh album Closure/Continuation, which wouldn’t come out for another seven months. Get stoked, Porcupine Tree fans. Only a few more days til Closure/Continuation drops.

Death Cab For Cutie

Album: Asphalt Meadows (Atlantic)

Release Date: 9/16

25 years ago, a small band from Washington state graced our ears by the name of Death Cab For Cutie. And 25 years later, they’re about to give us their tenth record Asphalt Meadows. Dropping this September through longtime label Atlantic Records (100 gecs, Coldplay, In This Moment), the group collaborated with Grammy Award winning-producer John Congleton (AJJ, The Dismemberment Plan, Manchester Orchestra). The record is their follow-up to 2018’s Thank You For Today and 2020’s The Georgia EP which had DCFC covering bands like TLC, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Cat Power.

Phoenix

Album: TBA (Glassnote)

Release Date: TBA

French indie pop darlings Phoenix have been really quiet for a while after dropping Ti Amo in 2017. But in January, they confirmed that album #7 was in the works. And while no more word on the record has dropped recently, they did release to the public a brand new track called “Alpha Zulu”, which is slated to appear on the record.

UnityTX

Hometown: Dallas, TX

Out Now: MADBOY (Pure Noise)

For Fans Of: Body Count, Limp Bizkit, Stray From The Path

Hailing from the great state of Texas, UnityTX go heavy as fuck. The hardcore/hip-hop quartet have been around since 2014, but they started making bigger waves in 2019 when they signed with Pure Noise Records (Belmont, Graduating Life, Meg & Dia.) The quartet have had their ups and downs, numerous lineup changes, and just recently had to cancel a tour with Deez Nuts in Europe. Yet with all these roadblocks, it hasn’t stopped the quartet from doing what they do best. They’ve done shows with Emmure, Poppy, Spite, I AM, and will embark on a tour with The Amity Affliction and Sleeping With Sirens next month, that is if it isn’t postponed due to the coronavirus.

Good luck googling this band. They’re making happy music for a troubled world, and they are the light we need in these dark times. FITNESS have done shows with Matt & Kim, Kongos, and Big Data. Sub Urban

Hometown: New Jersey

Out Now: Thrill Seeker (Warner)

For Fans Of: Billie Eilish, Joji, Lorde

TikTok has made celebrities out of many musicians. For example, Y2K, iLOVEFRiDAY, and former Prenatt’s Picks band Beach Bunny. Another artist on that list is Sub Urban, the dark pop project of 20-year-old Danny Maisonneuve. The New Jersey artist broke it big with his track “Cradles,” which TikTok took and made it enormous than it already was. The video has reached over 99.5 million views, and his YouTube account just hit one million subscribers. He’s since released his debut EP Thrill Seeker, which dropped in mid-March on Warner Records (Avenged Sevenfold, My Chemical Romance, PVRIS.) And while he does sound like Billie Eilish, he does not like the comparison.

Y!KES

Hometown: Birmingham, UK

Out Now: Everything Pointless Is Correct (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Don Broco, Lower Than Atlantis, Mallory Knox

“Always take risks, wear whatever the fuck you want, be the person you want to be.” This statement from the Birmingham-based anti-pop quartet Y!KES perfectly sums up what they’re all about. With bold statements and bright colors, they aim to catch your eyes, whether it be with their flashy fashion sense or their catchy music. Their new vocalist Oli Long has already “filled the boots” and now they’re ready to concentrate on catching everyones’ attention. Be on the look out for Y!KES.

100fables

100 Fables

Hometown: Glasgow/Troon, Scotland

Out Now: History – Single (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Blondie, The Killers, Panic! At The Disco

While the members of new wave pop group 100 Fables haven’t toured in the U.S., their music however has been on the airwaves. “Extremely cool that [our single “History” has] been played over in the US!” vocalist Lindsey Liora said. The Glasgow quartet have their style buried deep into the 80’s, reminiscing of acts like Blondie and Roxy Music. 100 Fables got their name from an unreleased Prince track “99 Fables.” “The main goal is to do this full time and be able to sustain ourselves,” drummer Logan Whyte said. “Probably what every band at our stage would say. We’re all passionate and driven people, this is something that we won’t stop trying till we get there. Ideally, selling out stadium tours, that’s the pinnacle I guess. Or maybe a gig on Mars? Both are a long way off at the moment. However, the touring life is fun, it’s definitely something that we all want to do.”

You might not know about indie-pop quintet Early Eyes, but you soon will. Freshly signed to Epitaph Records (The All-American Rejects, Hot Water Music, Nascar Aloe,) Early Eyes are a band that was made for alternative/indie radio stations. Their quirky funky vibes can put a smile on anyones’ face. Just look at the comments on their music video for their Epitaph debut single “I’m Enough.” Everyone loves it, and you will soon too. LURK

LURK

Hometown: Chicago, IL

Out Now: Electro-Shock (Pure Noise)

For Fans Of: Angel Du$t, Ceremony, Dead Kennedys

Mixing hardcore with rock ‘n’ roll, Chicago punk rockers LURK are quite an interesting bunch. Formed in 2017, LURK — vocalist Kevin Kiley, guitarists Alex Rackow and Kevin Maida, bassist Dan Durley, and drummer Pedro Unzueta — are a solid bunch of guys making loud and hard punk-rock music that’ll get the kids moving. Their newest EP Electro-Shock is a heavy hitter. LURK have done shows with Grayscale, Knuckle Puck, Seaway, Candy, and Modern Color. Expect a full-length later in the year.

Best Ex

Hometown: Ramsey, NJ

Out Now: Gap Tooth (On My Mind) – Single (No Sleep)

For Fans Of: Carly Rae Jepsen, Halsey, Taylor Swift

Best Ex used to go by a different name and a different style. Known for the longest time as the pop-punk band Candy Hearts, that name and style all changed when lead vocalist/guitarist Mariel Loveland announced in 2017 that the project would now be called Best Ex to better suit with her mental issues. And while the sound might be different, Best Ex is not ex-Candy Hearts. Loveland summed it up as being a “breakup makeover.” Now with No Sleep Records (Charmer, Hot Mulligan, Worst Party Ever,) Best Ex are ready to shine. Their sophomore EP Good At Being Bad comes out May 22.

Out Of Love

Hometown: London, UK

Out Now: S.L.U.M.P – Single (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Culture Abuse, Drug Church, Heart Attack Man

London punk’s Out Of Love only have one song out, and yet this song “S.L.U.M.P” is so good apparently that it has one publication calling it the single of the year. Little is known about the quartet, but what we know is that they do have the energy and chops to hang out with cool kids like PUP and Drug Church. For a brand new band, they got the skill to go hard. Out Of Love will be playing their first ever show on Saturday, April 11, at Bassments Speakeasy Bar in Dunstable, UK. Not bad for a band who’s roughly two years old.

Defining Lines

Hometown: Bradford/Leeds, UK

Out Now: Our Volition – Single (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Architects, The Devil Wears Prada, Memphis May Fire

Imagine getting to open up for your idols. That’s what West Yorkshire based metalcore act Defining Lines were able to accomplish in 2019 when they played with Memphis May Fire. “I think it’s one of those things we’ve always joked about when we’ve seen posters at shows, ‘Imagine if we could get on a show with them,’” guitarist Micky T told Discovered Magazine before Defining Lines did their biggest gig to date. “This time it actually happened and as soon as we saw it drop in our inbox I think we all kinda lost it, I love MMF!” Defining Lines so far have one EP (2018’s As Our Souls Depart) and two singles, the latest being “Our Volition,” dropping back in February. The EP alone has amassed over 80,000 plays on multiple streaming services. Once again, not bad for a brand new band. Their next show is Saturday, March 28, with DEADLAST at the Arden Road Social Club in Halifax.

Oh God, Here’s 20 More Of The Weirdest Covers Ever Recorded (Part Two)

Oh God, Here’s 20 More Of The Weirdest Covers Ever Recorded (Part Two)

Let’s just end this already.

As I mentioned prior in my other lists, “I have to inform you that the songs on this list are covers that were recorded for a compilation, an album, or as a single. There will be no live covers on this list.” Who knows if I’ll ever do a list for strange live covers.

This is part two. Click here for part one.

1. Jonah Ray – Amish Paradise (Originally by “Weird Al” Yankovic)

Who covers a parody? Jonah Ray, that’s who. The current host of Mystery Science Theater 3000 announced that he was gonna release an EP called You Can’t Call Me Al that’s filled with covers of “Weird Al” Yankovic songs, including parodies. One of them is “Amish Paradise”, a parody of Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise”. As Asian Man Records puts it, “Jonah recorded original music using Weird Al lyrics. The result is a crazy mish mash of Atom And His Package meets Jeff Rosenstock meets Weezer meets warm smiles.” You Can’t Call Me Al comes out August 16 on Asian Man Records (The Bruce Lee Band, Dowsing, Ogikubo Station)

2. Hawthorne Heights – Butterflies (Originally by Kacey Musgraves)

Emo legends Hawthorne Heights dropped a two-song single called Dads Of Sad. It features the band doing renditions of songs by Billie Eilish (“8”) and Kacey Musgraves (“Butterflies”). Their version of “Butterflies” sounds like nothing the band has ever done, and it’s completely different from the upbeat country pop song by Musgraves. It’s slow, dramatic, and somehow eerie. Oh, and it got Musgraves excited, making her cry at the airport.

3. Ki:Theory – Stand By Me (Originally by Ben E. King)

Many know this cover because it was featured on the TV series Fear The Walking Dead. The electronic alt-rock artist Ki:Theory flips the Ben E. King classic on its head, making it feel perfect for the zombie apocalypse. How he turned this beloved 60s soul track into this slow, distorted song is beyond me. Once again, thank you Midwest Emoposting for showing me this.

4. The Aquabats! – Knowledge (Originally by Operation Ivy)

I could’ve chose Green Day’s version, but this one’s stranger. On the tribute album Take Warning: Songs Of Operation Ivy, bands like The Hippos, Reel Big Fish, Home Grown, Long Beach Dub All-Stars, and Cherry Poppin’ Daddies covering songs by the short-lived band Operation Ivy. Superheroes The Aquabats! turn the punk classic into a campfire sing-a-long filled with kids. And no, they don’t say “fuck”. Sing along, kids.

5. Tegan And Sara – Suffer (Originally by Bad Religion)

Nearly a decade ago, MySpace and SPIN magazine teamed up to release Germs Of Perfection: A Tribute To Bad Religion. Bands and artists like Frank Turner, New Politics, Switchfoot, Polar Bear Club, and Riverboat Gamblers paid tribute to the Californian punk group whose career spans almost 40 years. The Canadian twin duo Tegan And Sara strip down the punk song into an acoustic indie song with the occasional synth. Even with it being stripped down, it still rocks.

6. The Cardigans – Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (Originally by Black Sabbath)

The Cardigans sure do love Black Sabbath. The Swedish rock band have covered the legendary metal group numerous times, doing strange versions of “Iron Man”, “Changes”, and “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath”. On “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath”, the band go into a groovy, lounge vibe with a hint of pop. This interpretation is dreamy and makes you wonder who did “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath” better.

7. Cake – I Will Survive (Originally by Gloria Gaynor)

How did this become a successful single? Bizarre rock group Cake covered this classic disco song by Gloria Gaynor on their sophomore album Fashion Nugget, and it was a hit for the band. John McCrea’s odd vocals are barely on the beat while the rest of the band jam out. Simply put, this cover is either hit or miss depending on the person. Oh, and Gaynor hates it due to the profanity.

8. Mariachi El Bronx – I Would Die 4 U (Originally by Prince)

Finally a Prince song you can play at your quinceañera. Ten years ago, SPIN released Purplish Rain, a tribute to Prince’s 1984 album Purple Rain. Artists like Fol Chen, Riverboat Gamblers, of Montreal, The Twilight Sisters, and Chairlift appeared on it. So when Mariachi El Bronx appeared on the track list, you know what they’d do. It’s straight up a mariachi version of this pop track, and it’s still amazing.

9. Trampled By Turtles – Disappear (Originally by Motion City Soundtrack)

Wanted to hear a bluegrass version of a pop-punk song? In 2011, Minnesota based bands Motion City Soundtrack and Trampled By Turtles covered each other on their split EP. MCS put an alt-rock spin on TBT’s “Wait So Long” and TBT went full-blown bluegrass on our emo asses. Their take on “Disappear” is a feast for the ears, showing us that TBT can never go wrong. Fun fact: this was how I first found out about TBT.

10. Taco – Puttin’ On The Ritz (Originally by Fred Astaire)

I’ve done two lists and yet I forgot about this one. The only hit by Indonesian-born Dutch singer Taco was a cover of a song from the 1920s. Associated with Fred Astaire, this song got an 80s makeover, fueled by synths, drum machines, and Taco’s (yes, that’s his actual first name) fascinating vocals. The cover reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified Gold by the RIAA. It was also Taco’s only hit in the states.

There were a ton of covers that I contemplated on putting on this list, but had to choose which were the best odd ones for it. An honorable mentions list will be out soon.

Maroon 5 Finally Confirmed To Play The Super Bowl, Will Be Joined By Two Rappers

Maroon 5 Finally Confirmed To Play The Super Bowl, Will Be Joined By Two Rappers

Looks like Variety was right.

The NFL finally confirmed on Sunday that Maroon 5 will headline Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta, Ga. The pop group will take the center stage during the Pepsi Super Bowl halftime show on February 3 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Maroon 5 celebrated the news by posting a video on their Instagram.

Joining Maroon 5 will be rapper Travis Scott and Atlantan rapper Big Boi who is one half of rap duo OutKast. Artists like P!nk, Rihanna, and Cardi B were scheduled to appear alongside the pop band, but dropped out in support of ex-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick (P!nk dropped out when negotiations between her and the NFL fell through). According to Billboard, Scott only agreed to play if the NFL did something for him. “Scott required the NFL to make a joint donation to an organization fighting for social justice in order for him to move forward with the event,” a source close to Billboard said.

Performers at past halftime shows include Justin Timberlake, Aerosmith, Lady Gaga, U2, No Doubt, Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Prince, Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen, The Who, The Black Eyed Peas, Madonna, Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, and Coldplay.
