The Most Anticipated Albums Of 2024 (Part Four)

The Most Anticipated Albums Of 2024 (Part Four)

This is part four of four. If you haven’t read part three yet, check it out here.

In 2024, we’re getting several great albums some several great bands and artists, but out of all the albums that are coming out this year, these are the ones you need to keep your eyes on. Here are the most anticipated albums of 2024, in no particular order.

Adeem The Artist
Album: Anniversary (Four Quarters/Thirty Tigers)
Release Date:
5/3

Having a country artist on this list is like a breath of fresh air. I was introduced to Adeem The Artist from Anthony Fontano, and what I heard on Adeem’s last record, 2022’s White Trash Revelry, made me a fan. So when I heard that the non-binary country indie darling was dropping a new record this year, I got stoked. Anniversary was produced by Butch Walker (Bethany Cosentino, Fall Out Boy, Lit) and is a solid radio country album with a twist.

Better Than Ezra
Album: Super Magick (Round Hill)
Release Date:
5/3

No you’re not reading this wrong. Better Than Ezra are on this list. You know, the band known for that 90s classic “Good”? Yup. Them. And why are they on here? Well it’s because their ninth studio album Super Magick — their first album in a decade — sounds amazing! No joke, I was blown away by the snippets that were released already. Is it enough to put them back in the spotlight? Who knows, but it is still a “Good” album. Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Hot Water Music
Album: Vows (Equal Vision)
Release Date:
5/10

Marking their second appearance on a PGP most anticipated albums list, Hot Water Music are back with another certified banger. But they’re not alone on this project. Members of Thrice, Turnstile, The Interrupters, and more, join in on the fun. “The theme that kept coming up while working on this record was growth — how writing a song, recording an album, or being in a band is like planting a seed and helping it grow,” the band said about Vows, their tenth studio album. “We think a lot of that had to do with looking back and realizing that over 30 years, we’ve managed to make something special that we all really love.”

Cage The Elephant
Album: Neon Pill (RCA)
Release Date: 5/17

Five years have passed since Kentucky’s Cage The Elephant dropped an album. That all changed in January when they announced Neon Pill, the official follow-up to their Grammy Award-winning album Social Cues. That delay can be thanked to various factors such as the pandemic, touring, and frontman Matt Shultz almost going to jail for having guns in a hotel in NYC. Yes that did indeed go down. Neon Pill was produced by John Hill (Carly Rae Jepsen, Foals, Mondo Cozmo) who worked on their previous record. Could they get their third Grammy with Neon Pill? We’re gonna have to wait and see!

One Step Closer
Album: All You Embrace (Run For Cover)
Release Date: 5/17

Wilkes-Barre straight edge quartet One Step Closer made waves with their debut This Place You Know in 2021. Three years later, they’re back and better than ever. Partnering with Jon Markson (Drug Church, Koyo, Self Defense Family) and Run For Cover Records (Citizen, Horse Jumper Of Love, Narrow Head), One Step Closer put their all into All You Embrace. “I wanted to showcase One Step Closer in its fullest state,” vocalist Ryan Savitski said to Alternative Press about AYE. “Every single part of the band, I wanted it to be there. I wanted us to be 100% ourselves and be as authentic to our band as we could possibly be.” It’s their first album with new guitarist Colman O’Brien.

Super American
Album: Gangster Of Love (Wax Bodega)
Release Date: 5/31

Buffalo’s best kept secret are back! Super American announced Gangster Of Love by pretending that Pitchfork leaked the album for a review…which all led up to the album’s first single appropriately titled “Hopefully Pitchfork Doesn’t Hear This”. Never change, boys. Produced by Sam Guaiana (Bayside, The Devil Wears Prada, Holding Absence), Gangster Of Love is a massive step-up from SUP, according to the band, that is. “[Our last album] was basically a record filled with anxiety as a survival mechanism,” Super American told Rock Sound. “This time around, it was less of a victim mindset. Thematically, I feel like it’s more about yearnings and desires and what you want for yourself. We wanted this album to feel like you were stepping into this little world, and working with Sam helped us accomplish that.” Hopefully Pitchfork does hear this, and I bet they’ll love it.

+/-
Album: Further Afield (Ernest Jenning/7ep)
Release Date:
5/31

Alternative Press introduced me to +/- a decade ago when they reviewed Jumping The Tracks, giving it a 4/5. I became intrigued by the band solely due to their interesting name. If you’ve read my blog, you may know I’m a massive sucker for band names that are either too long (i.e. The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die) or hard to look up (i.e. †††). +/- (or Plus/Minus) fit that criteria. But alas I have not caught up with them since. And then I discovered that they’re dropping an album at the end of the month. +/- writes on their Bandcamp page, “As the band members transitioned into parenthood, they continued to write together. Weekly recording sessions became a cornerstone of their routine, slowly redefining their sound and sonic palette. This work culminates with the release of their sixth full-length LP…” They worked with numerous bits of media, including “AI strings from Sounds.Studio (an AI music platform co-founded by Chris [Deaner, drummer])”, a high school choir, Chris’s own grandfather, and interesting instruments such as the singing saw, pedal steel guitar, Omnichord, clarinet and vibraphone. Let’s hope the decade long wait was worth it.

The Story So Far
Album: I Want To Disappear (Pure Noise)
Release Date:
6/21

While The Story So Far have been inactive studio-wise for a few years, the members of TSSF have been busy. Parker Cannon has the pop-punk supergroup No Pressure who tackled When We Were Young last October, and guitarist Kevin Geyer has Elder Brother, who dropped two albums during TSSF’s break. But now they are truly back, as the band dropped their first song in five years “Big Blind” last summer, and that’ll appear on their upcoming fifth record I Want To Disappear. A new single “Letterman” dropped back in March. From the two songs currently available, I Want To Disappear is totally gonna be album of the year worthy. Maybe album of the year.

The Aquabats!
Album: Finally! (Gloopy)
Release Date:
6/21

Aquabats, let’s go! Last time we saw our heroes, they crowdfunded their last album Kooky Spooky…In Stereo. Fast forward four years later, and the greatest superhero band in the world are celebrating 30(!) years and dropping a new record titled Finally!. It’s also their first album with a new lineup, as The Aquabats! added former members Chainsaw The Prince of Karate and Catboy, plus a brand new member: Gorney (he’s the one not in costume in the photo above). You can bet Finally! will be super rad. No songs are out yet, so enjoy this song from their Coachella set from last month.

Four Year Strong
Album: TBA (Pure Noise)
Release Date: TBA

While no word has officially been unveiled, Worcester’s Four Year Strong have been working on new material. Two new songs dropped, both of them heavy bangers: “Dead End Friend” and “daddy of mine”. Could we get an announcement before this year’s When We Were Young this October? Fingers crossed.

The Fest 19 Postponed To 2021, Announce Killer Lineup

The Fest 19 Postponed To 2021, Announce Killer Lineup

Surprised? You shouldn’t be.

The beloved Floridian punk rock music festival The Fest will not be taking place this year due to the current coronavirus pandemic that’s sweeping the world at the moment.

Founder Tony Weinbender broke the unfortunate news yesterday in a lengthly post on the festival’s website. “I know this is hard for many of you and it’s very hard on all of us,” Weinbender wrote to fans. “Many of us have worked very hard to bring you a killer lineup this year and the hardest part is knowing that even with our best intentions there is just not a feasible way to make FEST 19 the safe, fun, and awesome time we have all become accustomed to.”

Weinbender did however announce the new dates for The Fest 19, now taking place from Friday, October 29 to Sunday, October 31, 2021. He also posted three important options for those who bought tickets/hotel rooms/merch for this year’s installment:

OPTION #1: You can REQUEST A REFUND
OPTION #2: You can KEEP YOUR PASS/HOTEL/MERCH AND USE IT FOR THE POSTPONED 2021 DATES
OPTION #3: You can CHANGE THE NAME ON YOUR ORDER AND GIVE THE PASS TO SOMEONE ELSE WITH NO CHANGE FEE APPLIED

These requests will be good for the next 30 days. After Thursday, August 6, anyone who hasn’t contacted the website for refunds will automatically have their purchases transferred over to the 2021 makeup dates.

Now for the important part. Since the festival’s getting postponed, will there be a new lineup? Yes and no. So far, over 230 bands have confirmed that they will be playing in 2021, such as Frank Turner, Prince Daddy & The Hyena, Into It. Over It., Beach Slang, The Callous Daoboys, Red City Radio, Modern Life Is War, Gouge Away, Skatune Network, and The Lawrence Arms. For a full list of bands for 2021, click or tap here.

doja

Doja Cat

Hometown: Los Angeles, CA

Out Now: Hot Pink (Kemosabe/RCA)

For Fans Of: Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, Santigold

Meet the new Nicki Minaj. Doja Cat, real name Amalaratna Zandile Dlamini, first rose to popularity with her joke song “Mooo!” went viral in 2018. In the span of two years, she dropped her debut Amala in 2018 and her latest record Hot Pink back in November. The record is a major change in her style, trading in her dancehall vibes for pop and funk. She even appeared on the Birds Of Prey soundtrack with the killer track “Boss Bitch.” Oh, and to give her some scene cred, “Bottom Bitch” samples Blink-182’s “What’s My Age Again?”, so that’s something. She’s collaborated with acts like Tyga, Gucci Mane, and even  Nicki Minaj herself on the remix of her big hit “Say So.” Her Hot Pink tour was postponed due to COVID-19 and hopefully it’ll start later this year.

offroadminivan

Off Road Minivan

Hometown: Red Hook, NY

Out Now: Swan Dive (Tooth & Nail)

For Fans Of: Dashboard Confessional, Jimmy Eat World, Thrice

When he’s not busy kicking ass in the metalcore band Fit For A King, bassist Ryan Tuck O’Leary is throwing it old school with his other project Off Road Minivan. The alt rock quintet bounce between 90’s grunge and heartfelt emo vibes. Think Dashboard Confessional meets Thrice; that’s a good description of their sound. ORM formed in 2018 and have released one EP and one full-length album called Swan Dive which dropped earlier this month on Tooth & Nail Records (Alexander Fairchild, Hearts Like Lions, Mae.) The band have done shows with Chase Huglin, Blis., and Davey Muise & The Sons Of Zero. So if you’re a fan of FFAK, why not check out the glorious tunes of ORM.

NOT A TOY

NOT A TOY

Hometown: Denver, CO

Out Now: J Cash – Single (Fearless)

For Fans Of: AJR, grandson, twenty one pilots

The Denver-based collective NOT A TOY are quite mysterious. Formed from the ashes of the rock band Shatterproof, NOT A TOY are here to wow you with their charm. They don’t consider themselves a band, but as a collective of four creatives. They don’t just make music, they make their clothes, their videos, and even their artwork. Simply put, NOT A TOY are one of the most fascinating groups to appear in the scene in a very long time. You might’ve heard of them when they were announced as the newest act to join Fearless Records (Chunk! No, Captain Chunk!, The Pretty Reckless, Underoath) during their Fearless At Home livestream earlier this month. As their label puts it, “If Kanye West and Pharrell joined forces to produce a rock group co-fronted by Jesse Rutherford and Lana Del Rey, it might sound something like Not a Toy.” NOT A TOY are not to be toyed with.

blackpumas

Black Pumas

Hometown: Austin, TX

Out Now: Black Pumas (ATO)

For Fans Of: Durand Jones & The Indications, Leon Bridges, St. Paul & The Broken Bones

Tears For Fears. The Black Keys. City Morgue. What do all of those bands have in common? They’re all duos, and so is this band: Black Pumas. The soulful R&B duo have only been around for three years and have already done so much. One of those accomplishments was being nominated for Best New Artist at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards back in January. While they didn’t win, one of them does have one under his belt. Guitarist/producer Adrian Quesada won a Grammy with his previous band Grupo Fantasma in 2010 for Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album. In 2019, the duo signed with Dave Matthews’s record label ATO Records (The Bronx, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Primus.) So far, they’ve done shows with Norah Jones, Toadies, and Anderson East. With COVID-19 hitting the country, the duo are using their spare time to help out various venues and record shops in their city with some fundraisers.

alexlahey

Alex Lahey

Hometown: Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Out Now: Sucker For Punishment – Single (Nicky Boy/Dead Oceans)

For Fans Of: A.W., Courtney Barnett, Paramore

If Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance loves your stuff, that means you’re doing something right. He got chills when he heard her rendition of their classic hit “Welcome To The Black Parade” for Triple J’s recurring Like A Version series. That’s one of the many growing highlights in the musical career of 27-year-old singer-songwriter Alex Lahey. Influenced by The Killers and Dolly Parton, Lahey’s career skyrocketed with the success of the 2017 track “Every Day’s The Weekend,” which went gold in her native Australia. She’s even making some small waves in the pop-punk community when she appeared on a previous Prenatt’s Picks band Stand Atlantic’s reimagined song “Skinny Dipping.” She’s done shows with Liam Gallagher, The National, and Cyndi Lauper, and if COVID-19 lets up later this year, she’ll be touring with City And Colour in October. But for real, check out her MCR cover, it’s amazing.

DRAIN

Hometown: Santa Cruz, CA

Out Now: California Cursed (Revelation)

For Fans Of: Absence Of Mine, No Option, Vamachara

“[DRAIN] could prove to be one of hardcore’s biggest names in the immediate future.” That’s what British music magazine Discovered said about the Cali hardcore punks when reviewing their new album California Cursed. Formed in 2014 and barely consisting of any original members (drummer Tim Flegal is the last one,) the quartet have hit several incredible milestones. For example, they achieved international press, did a photo shoot with Santa Cruz skateboards, and signed with the legendary hardcore label Revelation Records, the label behind Sick Of It All, Gorilla Biscuits, and Texas Is The Reason. They’ve done shows with Slapshot, Vein, Cruel Hand, Power Trip, and Gulch. Simply put, DRAIN is your friend.

vaines

Vaines

Hometown: Los Angeles, CA

Out Now: Summer’s Over – Single (Hopeless)

For Fans Of: gnash, Lauv, Troye Sivan

Meet the most overlooked artist on Hopeless Records (The Dangerous Summer, Lil Xtra, ROAM.) Jared Gaines, the man behind Vaines, had a horrible childhood and developed an over-the-top personality to cope, thus allowing his creativity to blossom into songwriting. That’s where Vaines was born. And while his music sounds poppy, he isn’t attached to labels. “I used to make metal music, then I made rock songs, then I made pop songs, and now I make whatever I want,” he told All Access Music. “I rapped as a kid so now if I feel like it, I’ll rap on a song. I’ve grown into the artist I’ve wanted to be for years and I fully expect my sound to continue to evolve as the years go by. If you hear too much of the same thing from me, I’ve failed myself as an artist and you should burn me at the stake.” He signed with Hopeless last year. Definitely check out Vaines when you can.

bobvylan

Bob Vylan

Hometown: London, UK

Out Now: We Live Here – Single (Venn)

For Fans Of: Bad Brains, Ho99o9, Scarlxrd

Meet Bobby and Bobb13, the incredible minds behind London’s heavy-hitting hardcore-rock-rap-grime act Bob Vylan (yes they’re named after Bob Dylan.) NME described them with, “Melding the attack of grime with the bite of punk, Bob Vylan couldn’t be further from their folksy namesake; instead, they take on gentrifying yuppies, gap-yah enthusiasts and amateur film photographers with paralysing lyrical venom.” They’ve done shows with Slaves (UK) and Gallows, and if COVID-19 wasn’t fucking up everyones’ plans, they were scheduled to play 2000trees this July with The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die, Creeper, and Lizzy Farrall. Bob Vylan might be playing next year for the makeup dates.

dealer

Dealer

Hometown: Springbrook, Queensland, Australia

Out Now: Saint – EP (Stay Sick)

For Fans Of: Bury Your Dead, Misery Signals, Vein

What happens when you combine the former and current members of Alpha Wolf, Capture The Crown, Northlane, Iconoclast and Codeine King? You get one of Australia’s greatest supergroup. Vocalist Aidan Holmes (ex-Alpha Wolf) and his merry group of men go hard every single time, and they’re not giving you a second to catch your breath. To be quite blunt, their shit hits hard. Dealer have played with Varials and Spite, and they just had to cut their US tour with Spite and UnityTX short due to…you know. New dates will be unveiled soon. Because one thing’s for sure: nothing fucks with Dealer.

ashbricky

Ash Bricky

Hometown: San Joaquin, CA

Out Now: Rats, Mice, And More… (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Jeff Rosenstock, Laura Stevenson, Neutral Milk Hotel

Sometimes you find an artist you like in the most peculiar way. I discovered singer-songwriter Ash Bricky from YouTuber Movieunleashers, well known for his Starters series, who animated his video for “Chowchilla Song.” Sounding like a crust punk version of Car Seat Headrest and Neutral Milk Hotel, Bricky might be young, but his songs sound like they were crafted from the soul of an old punk. He mixes in several genres with his style, adding in ambient, folk punk, indie, avant-garde, and emo. Give him some time before you see him at The Fest, he’ll fit in just fine.

Well that’s it, 100 bands across the span of (nearly) 10 weeks. I hope you enjoyed this list as much as I did making it. If you want to read last year’s list, featuring Capstan, Year Of The Knife, Beach Bunny, shortly, and Spanish Love Songs, click the links provided underneath each band. Hope to see you all soon!
