Small Talks

Hometown: Myrtle Beach, SC

Out Now: A Conversation Between Us (Common Ground)

For Fans Of: Broadside, Paramore, Tonight Alive

Let me say this first: Small Talks are going to blow up in 2019. The pop-punk project created by singer-songwriter Cayley Spivey has been gaining steam with each new day. Spivey first started writing songs in her bedroom and performed at local coffee shops, gaining a fanbase that’s been rapidly growing. Small Talks signed with California based label Common Ground Records in 2017 and has released a few singles, an EP titled Until It Turns To Petals that same year, and dropped their debut album A Conversation Between Us back in February, which was one of the most anticipated albums of the year. Her and her touring band have done shows with Can’t Swim, With Confidence, and FLOODS, and played festivals such as Snowed In, The FEST, and the final Vans Warped Tour. Their Facebook says that “For Cayley, it’s all about connecting with the people around her through music and wanting to give a life long memory for her audience every show. She brings energy and surprises to every show while providing fans with a place to be themselves regardless of gender, sexual orientation, age, or race.” The band will be touring with shortly later in May.

Capstan

Hometown: Orlando, FL

Out Now: Stars Before The Sun – Single (Fearless)

For Fans Of: Belmont, A Day To Remember, Settle Your Scores

Calling themselves “progressive post-hardcore” and “metal for pop-punk kids”, Capstan are a light/heavy five-piece from sunny Florida who are here to brighten up your day with beatdowns and poppy riffs. Mixing in elements of post-hardcore, easycore, and pop-punk, they keep the heaviness found in post-hardcore and mix it in with the poppy hooks found in bands like New Found Glory and State Champs without abounding their sound. Capstan are one of the most unique groups in the current music scene. They just signed with Fearless Records (I Prevail, Oceans Ate Alaska, Starset) late last year and will be dropping their debut full-length sometime this year. They’ve toured with groups like Silverstein, Eidola, and Belmont, which shows the credibility that they can swing with both heavy-hitters and pop-punkers. Capstan will be hitting the UK this fall with Trash Boat and Doll Skin.

Hometown: Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Out Now: a modern tragedy, vol. 2 – EP (Fueled By Ramen)

For Fans Of: AWOLNATION, Brick + Mortar, Yungblud

America meet your maker. Hailing from the north is this politically fueled singer-songwriter, and he’s here to tell America about its problems one song at a time. The artist signed to Fueled By Ramen (Basement, Dashboard Confessional, ONE OK ROCK) in April 2018 and has released two EPs titled a modern tragedy vol. 1 and vol. 2. grandson has toured with acts like Hobo Johnson & The LoveMakers, Joywave, and The Smashing Pumpkins and will be hitting festivals like the Woodstock 50th Anniversary Festival, Slam Dunk, and Welcome To Rockville, which has him performing with acts like Santana,  Kublai Khan, and Papa Roach. He also just appeared on Rock Sound‘s Worship And Tributes II CD covering Rage Against The Machine’s “Maria”. As long as America’s in need of fixing, grandson will be here watching over his grandchildren.

HARD LOSS

Hometown: St. Louis, MO

Out Now: In The Grey – Single (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Beartooth, A Day To Remember, State Champs

When vocalist Tyler Kasch left Tear Out The Heart last year, he luckily had a back up band. Insert HARD LOSS, a hockey loving pop-punk band that keeps the heaviness that Kasch had with TOTH. Blending in elements of pop-punk with post-hardcore, HARD LOSS are hear to finally show the world what they’re made of. Their lyrics are personal such as the emotional “No One Fights Alone” and the hard-hitting “In The Grey”. They’ve done shows with Famous Last Words, Real Friends, and Hit The Lights in the St. Louis area. The biggest thing that’s happened to the band was they won a contest by the St. Louis Blues and got to perform their song “The Overtime Anthem (We All Bleed Blue)” to the crowd during a game in 2017. If you’re a fan of hockey, pop-punk, and shedding tears, you’ll love HARD LOSS.

Just Friends

Hometown: Dublin/Pleasanton, CA

Out Now: Nothing But Love (Pure Noise)

For Fans Of: The Band Apart, The Go! Team, Red Hot Chili Peppers

Like funk? Like punk? Like bands with a shit ton of people in them? Look no further than the Californian nonet Just Friends. If you read my blog, you probably read my review of their latest album Nothing But Love, just re-released by Pure Noise Records (Four Year Strong, Inclination, Youth Fountain). I called the album “a damn good time”, which it is. They’ve toured with Mom Jeans., Prince Daddy & The Hyena, and will be spending the summer touring on the touring festival Sad Summer Fest with The Maine, L.I.F.T, and Forever The Sickest Kids. They’re one of the funkiest bands on this list, so please pay attention to Just Friends.

KURORAK

Hometown: Jakarta, Indonesia

Out Now: XXI (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Camellia, Kobaryo, t+pazolite

Drum & bass, breakbeat, EDM, he does them all. This musical mage is conjuring up spells to get you dancing. “The bigger part my influences come from Japanese rhythm game musics,” KURORAK said. So with Japanese rhythm games being his main influence, it’s no surprise that some of his songs appear in one. He has a track in the rhythm games Cytus II and Dynamix (he won a contest for that one). The mage continued with, “There’s no really specific genre of what I usually do because I make songs of genres I feel like doing: some days it’s Drum n’ Bass, some days it’s electro, some days it’s sampling a bunch of other songs.” He did state that he had big plans for the year but is currently keeping it a secret.

Between You & Me

Hometown: Melbourne, Australia

Out Now: Everything Is Temporary (Hopeless)

For Fans Of: Knuckle Puck, Neck Deep, With Confidence

While they’ve been on Hopeless Records (Bayside, dying in designer, Story Untold) for over two years, the Australian quintet Between You & Me are still heavily unknown. They’ve got a pretty solid sound for a band who is only a few years old, and they’re on a label that signs only the finest pop-punk acts. Clearly they’re doing something right. They’ve toured with some of the scene’s best acts like WSTR, Like Pacific, The Maine, Trash Boat, and As It Is. Just listen to tracks like “Overthinking”, “Twice Shy” and “Dakota” and you’ll get hooked. Between You & Me will be busy this May, touring with Hellions in their native country and will be performing at Slam Dunk with I Don’t Know How But They Found Me, Lights, and Cruel Hand.

Spencer Robinson And The Wolf Spiders

Hometown: Los Angeles, CA

Out Now: Poisonous Berry – Single

For Fans Of: The Cramps, Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, Tom Waits

Spencer Robinson is no stranger to the world of music. He’s spent years playing in the legendary LA garage band The Lords Of Altamont, performing with acts like X, The Cramps, and even The Who. Now under his new project, he vows to create material that’s darker and grittier than his past work. Their debut single “Poisonous Berry” came out last October via UK label Komakino Records (Idiot Robot, Jack Winters, Yaperone). Expect  more stuff later this year.

Scavengers

Hometown: South Wales, UK

Out Now: Deadlock – Single (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Kids In Glass Houses, My Chemical Romance, Thrice

Over the years Wales has cranked out some pretty incredible bands, giving the world a melting pot of artists from multiple genres like Neck Deep, The Joy Formidable, and Funeral For A Friend. And now another band has emerged from the area, ready to their presence to be known: Scavengers. Created only five months ago, this alt-rock group have been working hard on their craft, getting ready to finally strike. “Our past projects taught us a lot about being in a band; from writing songs, to performing, to how the industry works, etc. but asides that, Scavengers is trying to succeed where perhaps our past exploits failed; we all agree that previously we were too hung up on genres, throwing out tracks because they didn’t tick a certain box,” vocalist Marek Ball said. “I think we’re just a lot more forgiving of ourselves with our writing; we’re not trying to write the deepest lyrics or the hardest drops, we just want to have fun with it all.” The quartet just dropped their newest song “Deadlock” last month. The group will make their debut performance tomorrow with Mantra at Tiny Rebel in Cardiff.

Lighterburns

Hometown: San Diego, CA

Out Now: The Last Time You’ll Love Me – EP (Self-Released)

For Fans Of: Brand New, Like Pacific, Saves The Day

If you went to Warped Tour last year, chances are you probably didn’t see Lighterburns. However, if you did see this San Diego based pop-rock trio, you saw one of the most underrated acts on the whole tour. Formed in 2016 as a duo, the band have been mostly gigging throughout the San Diego area, doing shows with Family Thief, Wanted Noise, and Farewell Winters. They spent the past couple summers on the Vans Warped Tour, rocking out throughout the summer. Their latest EP The Last Time You’ll Love Me reminisces of early 2000s pop-punk acts like Fall Out Boy and Saves The Day. The trio will be releasing a new single soon.

Every Time I Die, Comeback Kid, Hands Like Houses, More To Play 2000trees Festival

Every Time I Die, Comeback Kid, Hands Like Houses, More To Play 2000trees Festival

British music festival 2000trees have unveiled the lineup for their thirteenth annual year.

Acts like You Me At Six, Every Time I Die, Frank Iero And The Future Violents, and While She Sleeps will be headlining the event, while bands such as Milk Teeth, Therapy?, Cavetown, Hands Like Houses, and Comeback Kid will also play. Check the poster below to see the full lineup.

2000trees.jpg

What’s special about the event is that Buffalo’s finest Every Time I Die will be playing their second studio album Hot Damn! in full with other hits. Hot Damn! was released back in 2003 and features songs like “Floater”, “Ebolarama” and “Romeo A Go-Go”. “Hot Damn! has always been the one that put us on people’s radars and it was the one that was out the first time we came to the UK, so that’s a nice little throwback,” vocalist Keith Buckley told Flick Of The Finger. “When festivals are able to do something like this and get such a diverse line-up and secure a venue outdoors, it feels like something big. When you’re going to one of these as a fan of music and your whole surroundings feel so much larger than life it makes you want to enjoy the music. It makes you really open to hearing new bands. You’re going to need these festivals, whether it’s to feed a fanbase or to make one. So, I think it’s extremely important for the scene.”

This year’s festival will take place Thursday, July 11 through Saturday, July 13. The event will take place at it’s usual location at Upcote Farm in Withington, Gloucestershire, UK. Tickets are available now on the festival’s website. To keep up with more updates, check out their Twitter and Facebook pages.

2000trees was created back in 2007 and has groups and musicians like Frank Turner, The King Blues, Dananananaykroyd, Bombay Bicycle Club, Los Campesinos!, Gallows, Funeral For A Friend, The Bronx, Alkaline Trio, Refused, Beach Slang, and At The Drive-In perform.

The 20 Weirdest Covers Ever Recorded (Part One)

The 20 Weirdest Covers Ever Recorded (Part One)

As Wikipedia puts it, “In popular music, a cover version, cover song, or simply cover, is a new performance or recording by someone other than the original artist or composer of a previously recorded, commercially released song.” Sometimes, a cover can either surpass the original or shows us that maybe some songs should remained untouched from the original source.

For the past couple of weeks, this idea popped into my head about weird cover songs. So I finally decided to make a list that was originally 10, but then I found more. Now, it’s a list of the 20 weirdest covers I’ve found and heard. Buckle up buckaroos, you’re in for a wild ride.

Now before we continue, I have to inform you that the songs on this list are covers that were recorded for a compilation, an album, or as a single. There will be no live covers on this list. That’s a list for another day. So don’t expect to see Gym Class Heroes covering Lamb Of God, Miley Cyrus covering Nirvana, or Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness covering Bruce Springsteen.

1. Silverstein – Song To Woody (Originally by Bob Dylan)

In 2012, to celebrate their 50th anniversary, Amnesty International released Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan Honoring 50 Years of Amnesty International, a gigantic four-disc tribute album that contains 73 songs (along with three bonus tracks on iTunes). The lineup spans of a multitude of genres, from pop, country, alt-rock, jazz, and even punk. You got an impressive lineup featuring acts like Johnny Cash, Flogging Molly, Cage The Elephant, Queens Of The Stone Age, Jack’s Mannequin, Adele, Bad Religion, My Chemical Romance, Silversun Pickups, and Rise Against. But the strangest act has to be the inclusion of legendary Canadian post-hardcore band Silverstein covering Dylan’s 1962 song “Song To Woody”. The band shorten the track to two minutes and gave it a punk vibe. Silverstein are no strangers to oddball covers, covering Fleetwood Mac, Nine Inch Nails, Kayne West, The Get Up Kids, OneRepublic, and The Beatles. It’s gotta be the strangest song Shane Told and company have covered.

2. Train – Whole Lotta Love (Originally by Led Zeppelin)

Ok, Train and Led Zeppelin should not mix, and their recreation of Led Zeppelin’s sophomore album Led Zeppelin II shows. All nine songs are covered by the Californian rock band, including “Whole Lotta Love”, which shows the band leaving it alone and adding nothing new to it. Everything would be normal, but then you remember this is Train we’re talking about and you’re hearing Pat Monahan singing instead of the legendary Robert Plant. For the life of you, avoid this cover. But if you’re adventurous to listen, be careful.

3. New Found Glory – J’y Suis Jamais Allé (Originally by Yann Tiersen)

Years ago, New Found Glory released an EP called From The Screen To Your Stereo that featured songs from films like Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves (“(Everything I Do) I Do It For You” by Bryan Adams), That Thing You Do! (“That Thing You Do” by The Wonders), The Karate Kid Part II (“The Glory Of Love” by Peter Cetera), and Titanic (“My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion). In 2007, they made a follow up featuring more songs like Sixpence None The Richer’s “Kiss Me” (She’s All That), Tears For Fears’ “Head Over Heels” (Donnie Darko), When In Rome’s “The Promise” (Napoleon Dynamite), Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris” (City Of Angels), and Lisa Loeb’s “Stay (I Missed You)” (Reality Bites) which features Loeb on their cover. But on that album they cover the instrumental song “J’y Suis Jamais Allé” from the French romance/comedy film Amélie. The cover features NFG’s signature pop punk style but with the addition of an accordion and xylophone. I love this cover so much.

4. ROAM – Someday (Originally by Nickelback)

You have to be ballsy to cover one of the most hated bands of all time. To celebrate their 200th issue, Rocksound magazine released a free CD called Worship And Tributes which featured 14 bands covering their favorite songs. Acts like You Me At Six, As It Is, Enter Shikari, Neck Deep, Hacktivist, and Architects, covered bands like Foo Fighters, Weezer, Funeral For A Friend, Slipknot, Bring Me The Horizon, and Motion City Soundtrack. ROAM decided to cover their favorite band: Nickelback. And holy shit is it oddly great. They turned the Canadian rock band’s boring song into a pop punk jam. It’s so good that you can buy it on iTunes right now.

5. A Hero A Fake – Looking Up (Originally by Paramore)

Anyone remember A Hero A Fake? They were a metalcore band from Charlotte, N.C., who were on Victory Records (Awaken I Am, Colours, We Ride) for four years. Anyway, in 2011, they covered Paramore’s “Looking Up” and it’s an odd song. You’d think this is the first time someone did a metalcore version of a Paramore song, but they aren’t the first. I forgot about this cover until it popped into my head for this list.

6. Glass Cloud – Everybody Wants To Rule The World (Originally by Tears For Fears)

I hated this cover years ago and I still hate it now. It appeared on the charity compilation Take Action Compilation, Vol. 11 as the first song on disc two. Everything sounds normal, but then the breakdown hits and it all goes to shit. I love the drums and guitar work by current Emmure and ex-The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza member Joshua Travis. But that breakdown though…that godawful breakdown. Kids, don’t add screams to Tears For Fears, please.

7. Our Last Night – Who Let The Dogs Out (Originally by Baha Men)

Must I repeat myself? The New Hampshire post-hardcore band did an easycore version of the Junkanoo classic, and it sucks. If you can last the whole time without cringing, congratulations, you have a stronger will than I. There’s nothing more I wanna say about this abomination…it’s a fun cover, ok?

8. Breathe Carolina – With Or Without You (Originally by U2)

So…how does an electronicore duo from Denver pay tribute to the beloved post-punk band from Ireland known as U2? By making a bizarre cover of one of their classics. Released on the deluxe edition of their sophomore album Hello Fascination, this cover features a faster tempo and screams provided by Kyle Even. When I first heard this cover I was intrigued and loved it. Now I find it to be downright charming and original. It doesn’t ruin the vibe of the original and they put a twist on it that doesn’t saturate the shit out of it.

9. Macy Gray – Teenagers (Originally by My Chemical Romance)

In 2012, R&B superstar Macy Gray released a cover album simply titled Covered which showed her covering the most bizarre bands for an R&B artist to perform such as Metallica, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, AWOLNATION, Radiohead, and Colbie Caillat. But the weirdest track has to be her edit of the My Chemical Romance song “Teenagers”. She turns the punk rock song into an R&B jam that actually works, besides her butchering the lyrics. She changed most of the lyrics and that’s the only odd part. Maybe she didn’t want to sing about how “they’re gonna rip off your heads.”

10. Simple Plan – Justified Black Eye (Originally by No Use For A Name)

To honor No Use For A Name’s lead vocalist Tony Sly who passed away in 2012, Fat Wreck Chords released The Songs Of Tony Sly: A Tribute. The album featured artists like Alkaline Trio, Bad Religion, NOFX, The Gaslight Anthem, Pennywise, Frank Turner, The Bouncing Souls, Yellowcard, Anti-Flag, and Teenage Bottlerocket, covering songs from NUFAN and Sly’s solo career. Canadian pop punkers Simple Plan appeared on the album covering “Justified Black Eye” and fans like myself were quite shocked by what they did. Instead of sounding like anything punk, the band stripped away any punk style it once had and added ukulele, finger snaps, bongos, and a guitar which appeared in the chorus. It feels like a bastardized version of the original and makes it sound like a pop song. What were they thinking?

Part two will be posted later.
